Fair play to him. And he won an Oscar too. Busy night for him

You’d have thought he could make a more effective point without hitting Rock.
Rock’s joke was pretty offensive though. And apparently fully vetted before the show…

SJJIC as usual. Audience gave the silly sod a standing ovation fifteen minutes after he'd clouted someone live in front of billions

Optimistic assessment of the viewing figures for the oscars there
The whole thing was pretty silly though, it was a shitty joke but Smith's reaction seemed a bit performative.

It’s all OK. God told him to do it. Praise be.

Since when did Chris Rock become known just as Rock? I was baffled as he'll for a bit there thinking he'd hit The Rock!
Seems to just be the BBC reporting it like that actually.

Unless Alopecia isn’t really what’s wrong.
In a world ruled by PR folks, it’s refreshing to see someone’s emotions come out publicly

Brave man (6'2", athletic 220lbs, trained in at least boxing) defends wife against rude man (5'8", 170lbs)
I wonder if he'd have been so brave if
was The Rock and not just 'Rock'?
And WTF was he talking about "God is telling me to be a river to my people"?!
When I heard "my people" I couldn't help but thinking of:

Definitely a set-up.

You think?

Smith looks seriously stressed when he speaks later - looks like lots going on in his personal life.

There's been rumours flying around for years that Will Smith is in the closet and his marriage is just a front to keep his career.

There's more than rumours that they have an open marriage 'from his wifes' perspective.
Maybe he thought that if he's going after her I'm next?

He seems to laugh at the initial joke but his wife is looking less than impressed and then it cuts back to the stage, so I'm guessing he turned to her, laughing it up, she gave him one of those looks we all know and the rest is history.
Definitely one of the most entertaining things that happened although I'm wondering why a slap rather than a punch? I guess its making a point without the risk of real damage to either of you.

My youngest just mentioned to me that this has already been explained on Reddit : it’s because paper beats rock.

Funny how folk are talking about Will Smith having to hand back his oscar, there's a loonnngggg list of people of genuinely shitty people who've won oscars over the years (Harvey Weinstein has his name on over 80).

It looked like he went laughing along with it to boiling with anger in a split second. Either he was laughing nervously while still processing it, or he saw Jada's reaction.

The most important question is: was the joke actually funny though?

I only called him that because it's his surname, and typing on my phone I didn't want to put his full name each time

Referring to people by their surname is entirely normal, you know.

It’s odd, when the camera cuts to Smith he seems like he’s going to try and laugh it off then realises he’s gone too far and starts shouting abuse.
