Which estate car/suv for £15,000 or so?

Am looking to get a practical car for general use alongside the Boxster so I can ferry around dogs and children when Mrs Mike is out in her Navara, or if I don't want to take the Navara (due to it being impractical or just the fact its full of horse gubbins and stinks).
Looking for something reliable with a decent sized boot, not fussed about petrol or diesel... 2WD or AWD. Doesn't need to be a fast wagon - just something comfortable with decent space which I could run for 12-24 months before trading up to something faster.
My lazy brain says 5 series estate or X5 because I don't know any better/different tbh.

Cayenne, obvs, to match the Boxster.
Although the boot is pitiful.

Are Cayennes not potential money pits at that sort of money? Maybe not any moreso than an X5 or 5 series estate?

Kia Sorrento.
Brilliant family workhorse and they come with a 7 year warranty although nothing actually broke in the 3 years and 50k miles we had one.
About the same time Exiges wife had one over a Range Rover.

Our V60 has been very reliable, great on fuel and refined.
Can get a decent one for a lot less than 15k as well.

Superb is worth a look or even a Kodiaq if Vagging.
Ford stuff is generally a better steer but build quality is not on par if that's factor. As above, Korean, Volvo or left field, Infiniti FX with a v8 in it.

Superb gets my vote too. Mazda6 is very nice too, and decent size boot.

With the price of second hand cars nowadays £15k will basically put you in a high mileage 2004 Citroen C1.

Good shout about the Volvo, that's one of my favourite estate designs of the last while.

Superb / passat / V90
All solid choices
Mondeo estate is probably worth considering also.
Swallow a big brave pill and go for an xc90 or really ropey cayenne

We thought the XC90 was great until the gearbox ate itself and Volvo tried to shirk out of any responsibility for it.
I do like the look of Cayennes, but wonder how much of a money pit they could be. I do like the look of a Panamera estate, but am thinking I might use this estate to climb the car ladder a bit and trade it in each year against something more expensive ending up with a Panamera or something like a big engined CLS.
Hadn't thought about Fords.
5 series wagon is the safe choice if I don't go Skoda/VAG route I think, but I've not driven these smaller-engined BMWs so will do some reading.
Autotrader is up with a single malt to help...

It's mental, 5k buys you a 2010 focus 1.6.

5-series might sound a safe choice but it gets you an F11 (previous shape) which is fine but quite boring. I’d definitely check out the CLS in preference, or E-class if you need the bit of extra space. The Mercs feel better designed than the BMW.
