Hey team,

I figure there's a few of you on here who like a whisky every now and then. I'm looking to buy a bottle of something really nice for a friend in the UK as a thank you. Any tips on where to buy that will courier out to my buddy's address?

I just bought some Filey Bay Flagship for a customer from my local Vintner as he highly recommended it. It's from the Spirit of Yorkshire distillery and uses local ingredients.

When we were in NI for the NW200 my mate bought me this from the distillery - enjoyed it - 80 quid from various places

THREE WOOD, FINISHED IN PORT PIPES

Our Bushmills 16 Year Old is a marriage of single malts matured for at least 16 years in hand-selected Oloroso sherry butts and bourbon barrels, then finished in port pipes for up to a year. This triple casking transforms the colour to a beautiful ruby red and adds layers of juicy sun-ripened dark fruit and berries, complex almond nuttiness and a treacly vanilla spice.

Irish or scotch? I’d look at bushmills or macallan.

Scotch or Japanese I think.

Assume there's a handful of preferred webshops whisky nerds use in the UK?

I will always give the local Norfolk distillery a plug. Used to be the only one in England, not sure if that's still true.

Imagine you're probably best here https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/

I haven't used their online service but they have a number of physical shops as well.

Depends what your friend likes. Peaty vs rich? Lowlands? Speyside? Etc.

Master of malt a good buying source. We’ll all have our favourite distilleries to pitch to you but fundamentally it depends what your friend likes.

(For me: Bladnoch. Or a 21 year old MacAllan)

I’m a big fan of Johnnie Walker blue and recently (sadly) finished off a ghost and rare bottle .. the Blue now stays away under lock and key these days and is for solo special occasions as I drank a bottle of House of Commons whisky at 5am a few years ago with a couple of friends. Don’t even remember if it was any good! 🙄

In the US, I enjoy 18/21 MacAllan or JW Blue but the best one I’ve had was a bottle I shared with the husband of Suntory’s lead counsel last year - it was a gift given to board directors and just had a number and a Japanese symbol on the 500ml bottle - ‘‘twas epic.. and sadly irreplaceable.

I think masters of malt do a sampling order, where you try several different whiskies; could be a good bet.

I ended up going with a Japanese Hibiki - nice enough to be a decent gift alongside something else I've done but also one of those flavour profiles that isn't going to challenge you too much.

My own stash here is largely Japanese stuff with some Macallans and Glenfarclas and Glendronnach thrown in.

I've had a couple of bottles of the Hibiki and it's a good whisky IMO, I'm sure they'll be very happy with it...

Yes I think so too. I have a half open bottle here and love it. Significantly cheaper to buy in the UK currently - normally the other way around as we're pretty handy with importing most things from Asia. Have to buy at the right time depending what's happening with exchange rates and all that
