The "What next?" Thread...

The GTi lease finishes in December and I'm torn what to do next. I've got a few different routes to consider:
Option 1 - PCP finance and get an M2. This is by far the favourite option, but there's a couple of potential spanner's thrown in - firstly my missus is having a shit time at work and I wouldn't mind minimising outgoings so she can bail if needed. Secondly, M2s seem overpriced at the moment (not a lot of decent stuff (manual and not blue) under £35k really and they were heading more like £25k pre-covid.)
Option 2 - buy something cheaper with cash (maybe £5-7k) - but who knows what - Clio RS, Fiesta ST, older BMW, ???
Option 3 - any other interesting choice of car up to around £25-30k with a low interest loan
Criteria is:
- fast/fun
- able to carry a child seat and a mountain bike (not at the same time).
- usable for c.10-15k miles a year
- wide arches are preferred.

An M1/240i seems like a perfect solution - but I just don't like them because the M2 exists! Id rather buy an older M135i for a lot less to be honest if I wasn't getting an M2.

Have you considered a 1966 Ford Galaxie Convertible ?
If that's no good, then get the M2.

You are an M fanboi, so get the M2 you want - on the assumption that if your missus kicks her job, she will move to something else rather than giving up work.

yeah, this does seem the obvious answer - I'm just interested if I've missed any obvious answer.

not really, but it needs to be a proper daily driver - so I can't be arsed fixing rusty bits or having it off the road to fix age related stuff.

I think you recognise the flexibility of your M3s to do humdrum, but remain “ready now” to engage with you whenever the opportunity for a quick squirt arises. Which you can’t always predict.
Something more focussed like an Elise will reward more, but you need to accept that you’ll need to take your wife’s car when you want to MTB.
Cayman, Boxster or Evora somewhere in the middle of those options. (In terms of reward vs # of times you need to borrow her motah)

i also take my boy to preschool 3 days a week - so whilst I don't need a 4 door - I do need a car capable of having a 4 year olds car seat in it. And even if I swerve the bike requirement, the car I buy still has to be suitable for my mrs to drive with 4 year old and his bike/etc whilst I take her car.
As much as a 2 seater appeals, it wouldn't really work.

You've triggered my Evora Fanboi. But whilst it is very comfy in the front, I can't describe it as
spacious in the back.
I don't expect this is enough to change your true desire though.....

A 130i manual, I think a small NA 5 seater will be a depreciation proof car for quite a few years yet.
