Hoovie did a preview of that car, it's been well used too with about 100k on it. Insane money.

I actually find it quite depressing that there are people in this world who think this is a good use of $2m of their money.

It's just a reminder that some people are that wealthy that $2 million is literally no different to Joe Bloggs spending $2,000 on a banger toy.

I wonder if Tom Cruise bought it himself ?

Yeah, I know, and Bezos building a spaceship is the same, pro-rata, as me buying a bag of crisps or something, but that's not the point I was getting at.

If I passed up that bag of crisps and gave the money to a homeless person then net-net it's made very little difference to the world.

If <assorted billionaires> gave their "bag of crisps" equivalent to something useful it would make no difference to them but a huge difference to a huge number of people. Or even, a totally shocking suggestion here, pay an appropriate amount of corporate & personal tax and then the various governments around the world would have more money to help the people that need it.

I'm genuinely conflicted on this topic. I am a long, long way from being a bleeding heart liberal commie like Zed and I want to be able to choose what I do with my own money, but isn't some of this stuff simply an obscene selfish willy-waving waste ?

Apparently, it was an Australian professional cricketer.

This will turn ideological pretty quickly I reckon.

The pluses from Bezos and Musk building these spaceships is that leaving this planet and venturing out into the unknown will ultimately benefit the human race (I know Elon has said his ultimate goal is travel and colonization of other planets to spread the load on earth), they are playing a longer game and quite forward thinking IMO. I wouldn't class it as willy waving to the same degree that we see some rich Arabs gold plating a car/toilet, covering it in Swarovski crystals (especially when there is a huge amount of poverty in their countries for some) or someone spending 2mil on a 40k 928 just because it was in a film once. This is just self indulgent and benefits no one really. I do generally agree with you.

Could be worse, they could spend 2 million on a NFT just to own a meme.

I'd much rather that they and their corporations paid taxes without all the creative faffing so that countries could use that money on immediate needs. They'd still be rich enough to play around with space rockets, but the added billions would, as @Sundayjumper say, make a huge impact.

There's very little point in pretending to plan 50-100+ years ahead for an extremely limited number of people (i.e. those that can afford to buy tickets) when those resources are needed now for more urgent matters.
