Bad time to buy a car. But guess what it is.

Used prices seem to be going up by the day, so I put down a deposit today on one I saw yesterday. Replacing the Merc; I haven’t gone SUV despite seriously considering a Touareg or Macan. Went for something I wanted for the daily commute.
So, 6-cyl diesel estate. Can’t be many candidates so doubtless someone will guess within a couple of posts.

Not giving away too much information, but off the top of my head:
Merc C/E/CLS
Audi S4/A6
BMW 3/5
Jaguar XF
Are there any others?

530d xDrive was a strong candidate but I really dislike the design of all the alloys available on the pre-LCI. Possibly the next car in a few years.

Good question… no C-class 6-cyl diesels since the W204 though.

After all the times you gushed about how brilliant the old one was, I’m disappointed.
Is it a silver Scimitar coupe ?

Impressive guesswork. Yes.
Always said I liked mine very much, and that it would be good to buy one with plenty of spec at some point. It’s the same colour and same interior trim as I specced mine in 2016, but it has a lot more options on it. 2018 model with 17k miles, still smells new.

Old one? The CLS is great, I’ll do an end of term report. I really wish Merc made a shooting brake of the replacement.

Sounds like a nice place to while away a commute. Any particularly exciting options?

No, nothing madly exciting. I really wanted to find one with the Beaufort wood trim or the Flint Grey interior design pack but they just don’t seem to have been specced at all by buyers. Finding one from the last year of production with not many miles, in the same interior/exterior spec I chose myself, was enough for me to go for it.
Midnight blue with alcantara interior.

Retrofit? Probably £too much per piece to make it worthwhile

Wow, 'midnight' really is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that sentence.
That looks almost black to me.
Surprised you're losing the CLS - feels like you've only had it a year or so. How many miles did you put on it?

Had the CLS since the end of March 2020, so getting on for 18 months. 37,000 miles.
Retrofit the trim? Nice idea but unlike 3-series trim, you don’t find it cheaply on eBay.
It’s actually Moonlight Blue; I made exactly the same mistake confusing it with my old Corrado colour when I had my previous Allroad. Everyone said it was black then

It shines blue in the sun, much more than something like BMW Carbon Black.
