Still amazed they allow gambling (aka loot boxes) in games TBH. Gotta start them early....but at least with gamlbing you can potentially get something tangable.

It’s the normalisation of it in the minds of kids that worries me. 14 year old casually asking me what the odds of England winning etc.

I remember reading something about the when the fun stops, stop slogan and how it’s presented from a psychological viewpoint- the largest word by some margin is “fun” and is in a font stylised to look like bright lightbulbs, and is very eye catching. The stop is in a stop sign surround, which makes it around the same size as the word fun, but with smaller lettering

Basically the whole thing is written to make you see the word “fun” and draw your eye into the word “fun” and overlook the other words, and form a base level association of fun and the advert for gambling, entirely contrary to the message it’s giving

Recently I had a random recommendation on twitch for a gambling stream. Never seen these online platforms before but it was interesting - I watched someone burn through $150,000 in 30 minutes. Madness.

Couldn't agree more. It's normalising it for kids and making it look like an essential part of your banter with the lads. It can be incredibly destructive for some people and it's far to easy for people to get out of their depth.

I love horse racing and enjoy a flutter but you have to be careful. It's easy to lose track of spending online. Set limits and stick to them. When you win, withdraw straight to your bank.

I hate seeing all the advertising as I can imagine how the young me would have been with online gambling. Scary stuff.

I came away about £70 up at Ascot last week, but aside from that sort of day out, gambling doesn't really interest me at all. I don't think I've ever been in a betting shop and both times I went to Vegas I didn't really bother with gambling.

But I see plenty of mates who bet on football every week and I see how it could easily spiral up. The amount of advertising and the "normalising" of gambling on football in particular is definitely noticeable - especially as you don't even need to physically go into a dodgy betting shop any more.

I used to play roulette a lot, I actually met my other half in a casino - still costing me that night.

Anyway if you get known they take you out for black tie gents evenings for a meal and speaker. The guy I was sat next to at dinner lost 4 grand in 10 mins when we were back in the casino. Its actually a customer of mine now so I do get a bit of money back

I bought a few Euromillions tickets when the prize was over £100m and the odds were better than they are now; won just over £5k. The only reason I purchased at all was statistics, but it was still luck that meant I came out in profit.

I've put a few quarters in machines in Vegas; to see if it was fun (it wasn't). I've put a few fivers on horses when being dragged to the races for a corporate event, only to give me a reason to watch the nags.

Boris and his cronies could get an easy win by pushing through some regulation on advertising, video game gambling mechanics and fixed odds betting machines if they could stop arguing with each other about who fuked up the pandemic most.

To be fair, the deregulation of gambling did one good thing - it led to gambling debts being enforceable in the court. Before 2005 wagers were not enforceable contracts. The chap who sued Betfred would have been stuffed before the law changed.
