Sorry to hear it. Don’t just get a diesel Golf though; they’re good cars, yes, but way overpriced. You could do a lot worse than a Merc CLS but frankly you’re not an old man yet so I won’t recommend one 😄
There was an off duty copper who kindly stopped to render assistance who said exactly the same.

And if only you knew what an old man I am  - just found a tidy 2014 Golf GTI for 15k which is a tempter.
paying with your own money, then that's M135i territory.

Even RichB, who drives a Golf GTI, is suggesting something else - that’s got to be a sign that you shouldn’t go for the Golf!

i have warmed to it, I'd even say I enjoy it - but if I was paying cash for a car, I wouldn't have bought it.

What about a nice 335/435 i/d?

Update as I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seats. My friend’s mum was selling her car (2020 Golf 1.5 TSI 150 match) and I got it cheap enough that my man maths tells me I can sell it on in six months or so without losing any money.

Although my latest plan is to now save up and buy a Vantage as a second car.

Excellent choice with the Vantage 8-) and I suspect you’ll find the Golf rather good as a sensible utility car.

Yet another thread that starts off very promising but ends up with someone buying a Golf ?

I'll have finished my stint in Papworth and will have moved back to Oxford, hence will have less need for a practical car and will have saved a load of cash as I'm not paying rent for now...

I have made three threads, one ended up with a Boxster, one with a Jag XF Diesel and one with a Golf, so it is not a promising trend I will give you that...
