The Elon Musk SNL sketch reminded me of the early videos about the internet.

As I see it who would invest in a pension with all the fees, which you lose the lot when you die compared to this avenue to quick wealth. That's the next issue if it does tank. Or maybe the kids have had the right idea.

It’s an expensive lottery ticket where you have some control.

I really need to know how this one works lad. Buy an annuity the wealth goes when you or your Mrs dies. Buy property or fuck Elon musk coins the value is still there and you just have a tax bill. I'm probably wrong, so correct me 😉👌

Don't buy an annuity, invest it in equities if you want. Go to a pensions adviser rather than relying on your own incorrect assumptions.

I won't be be but millions of people are hoodwinked into it. The only pensions worth having are government backed. I think my dad got 3.5 times contribution from a university employer.

Broccers, genuinely - go and get some pensions advice. Your views show that you're way out of date; a pension is just a wrapper, and a tax-free one for most purposes, so they're just a better way to invest for the future for most people.

I do appreciate the advice. Pensions are a massive con in my mind.

Annuities, I'd agree. And often fees for administering pensions. But avoid annuities (as you can these days) and shop around on fees - the tax incentive makes it a no-brainer to use a SIPP as an investment wrapper. There are some favourable tax treatments on death too; the value is not just lost, and it's not just taxed before going to beneficiaries of your estate.

There is no answer. Nearing 50 it's a concern. At 18 I was certain it didn't matter as the 27 club seemed a decent stint. 😀 You can have a shit ton of money and stuff but never actually be happy.

I've been quite bad with the attention I pay to my pension, but in my new job the company double your input up to 5% of your salary so I've just gone for 5% max contribution. Even if the fund doesn't make any money that should build up a nice pot if I stay a while.
