Volvo 144 bought in 1973.

It's got about 750,000km on it now...
Any pics, that's awesome.
Needless to say, it wasn't my favourite object growing up, so not many photos in my archive.
But I did borrow it for a tour of South Australia back in the day. I will grudgingly compliment how well built it is.
The Swede, not the German :P

Somewhere near Parachilna. We drove from Wilpena Pound through the Flinders Ranges, all unsealed road at the time (probably still is).
Might be here

Odd one out.

Brilliant stuff 8-)

I was very lucky regarding cars and my dad as he was a motor trader and had some interesting stuff. His main toy was a 1944 Jeep. I will post some photos later. Never seemed to leave the garage much due to various issues with it unfortunately!

My Dad sold cars and vans for a large proportion of my childhood so we mostly knocked about in various Renaults, although in the 70s we had a purple Allegro and a couple of Mk1 Fiestas, inc one in yellow identical to the one on the show. I went to the South in France in that, layed out longitudily in a sleeping bag alongside all the camping gear. No belts! Crazy times.

My Dad's car history

Mini
Austin 1100
Ford Corsair
Ford Cortina mk1 (he hated it)
Austin 1800 (first that I remember, good car)
Princess (great apart from quality niggles)
Peugeot 504 (one of the favourites)
Vauxhall Cavalier mk1 (no choice, underpowered and horrible)
Vauxhall Cavalier mk2 (much better, but still not nice)
Austin Montego (back to choosing his own, we liked this one)
Ford Orion (no choice, we all hated this, worst of all, rusted in under a year)
Renault 25 mk1 (lovely car, one of my favourites)
Renault 25 mk2 (faster and better equipped, but not as nice as mk1)
Peugeot 605 3.0 (great car, fantastic handling)
Rover 800 (nice interior but massive let down after 605)
Jaguar XJ (X308 gorgeous thing just so special)
Renault Laguna (no idea why he did this)
Jaguar S-Type (not great, didn't feel like a Jag)
Jaguar XJ (X350 I found it for my brother, got passed along. I really like these and miss my old XJR)
Nissan GT-R / Audi S4./ BMW 530d

The ones I remember from when I was young:

Mini (EJB64E), that he dropped on his hand one time and still has the scar
Triumph Toledo (MYV478L), and doing handbrake turns in it round Rushmoor Arena (so it's amusing going there for targa rallying now)
Morris Marina (SDP750S, 1.3 on the logbook but was a 1.8)
Morris Ital (I think)
Talbot Matra Rancho, a holiday in it to Wales where we were going along and my Grandad in the rear passenger seat had the vertically sliding window open about an inch and a bird shat on him through it
A left hand drive VW Beetle that we bought from a US neighbour. Originally on California plates.
B-reg Sierra estate auto (my Mum had a hatchback one)

There seems to be a bit gap in my memory after that, at least in my ability to recollect instantly. Pretty sure a Mondeo followed the Sierra but not 100% on that. My Mum had a Rover 400 for ages.

More recently:
Citroen Picasso (while they lived in Spain)
Ford B-Max
Citroen C4 Picasso

My Dads car history is relatively small....

Triumph Dolomite Sprint
Vauxhall Chevette (I remember that being towed away after it was rear ended, think I cried 😂)
No car for a while as couldn’t afford one.
Then a Mk2 1.6 Cavalier, that died of rust and we got a burgundy Rover 213. I learnt to drive in that, 3 valves per cylinder Honda engine which you could rev till valve bounce, so much fun.
Then Rover 214sli
Renault Laguna 1.6, cloth interior, steel
Wheels and incredibly comfy.
Rover 220sli, a great engine and a pudding of a chassis.
Mk1 Focus 1.6
Mk1 Focus 1.4
Skoda Citigroup and Kia Sportage currently.

Dave!

Really enjoyed that episode - great idea for a feature.

My Dad tended to hold on to his cars for a bit so mine's a short list:

Renault 30 TX in blue - I loved that car immensely. I actually bawled my eyes out when he traded it for his 1st BX. I think it took my mum a few months to forgive him as well as she loved it so much.

Citroen BX 16 TS (I think) - A reg, in red, so when they first came out. Despite initial loathing because it replaced the 30, I grew to "appreciate" this one. That suspension was CAF to 5/6yo me.

Citroen BX 19GT Digit - C65 CNF, in silver. 1 of only 500 of the limited Digit models to reach the UK I believe, this was a gem. Had an on board computer, the coolest dash of any car ever, and a Pioneer pull out stereo:

He held on to that a looooooong time - 9 years and the best part of 200k miles I think (odd how owning a car for 9 years seemed like aeons back then!). It was fairly tatty when he part-exed it and I suspect it was scrapped as it looked a bit tired. Ultra rare now - not even sure if there are any on UK roads. Chopped in for:

Renault 25 TXE Executive - K970MCR in blue. Another corker and the last I'd consider in any way cool or memorable. He had this from '94 to '02 IIRC and that still seemed a long time. Had it up to 275,000miles by the time he traded it in. Not as reliable as the Citroens, from memory, which would mirror my experiences of PSA vs Renault products. But it was a great place to be, and had what seemed like a good bit of grunt. Always stood out like a sore thumb at parents envenings at school, with most of the other parents driving BMW/Merc/Audi/VWs or Volvos/Saabs.

I feel like French cars were so much more popular in the 80s than they are now. Everyone just wants German cars now.

3 gems there. I'm glad I briefly got to own a 3l 605, the 24v model. Half of the gadgets didn't work properly but it was a stunning car to look at and drive. My dad was in his 1st Megane by then, and I let him drive it before we took it on the Scumball - he was smitten.

Yes my Dad's 605 had some issues, that's why he ended up trading it in for the Rover.
(And then regretted it)

The first Renault 25 was the first car I regularly drove after passing my test. Loved the interior, the character, and even the 3-speed auto worked surprisingly well (better than the subsequent 4-speed we both thought). Unashamedly built for comfort and all the better for it.

Wasn't the standard BX speedo a crazy rotating drum at that time as well.

All got sadly sanitised later on in its life didn't it.

And wasn't the design originally for Volvo? (exterior)

I think early cars only, a design carry over from the GSA.

Quick google came up with this thread:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/top ... 21187&p=15

Which is quite mad, and I like it.

What what what?! We aren't allowed to like Top Gear on here!

My dad's cars were:

MK2 Cavalier, devoured camshafts faster than tyres.
MK2 Cavalier, Christ knows why after the first one but it was equally shit. It was when the fashion was to engrave the reg number on the glass and the dealer had done everything down to the indicators. Unfortunately they'd put the wrong number on so all the glass had to be replaced. Then it started to rust and had to be resprayed when it was a month old.

Sierra Sapphire, great car until my brother drove it into a tree.

320i, good car but too small.

Saab 9000, great car and huge inside!

Granada Scorpio 2.9 V6, terrifyingly thirsty so had to go.

E34 520i, lovely car.

E34 520i Touring. Even lovelier.

Audi A4 2.6 V6, utterly soulless.

E39 530 Sport. Great car.

E83 X3 3.0, complete crap.

F25 X3 2.0, leagues ahead of the previous gen and nearly as quick with the 8 speed ZF.

Yep, I got to drive a few of them when I worked at a specialist. The indicators were a rocker switch on the dash too.

Some amazing car histories their 8-)

My old mans car history...

Mk2 Golf GTi 16v
Renault 5 GT Turbo (in pearlescent white)
Honda Civic vtec (no issues with me and my 2 sisters in the back going to the south of france)
Renault 21 Turbo (I loved that car, boxy but I thought it was the coolest ever. Took a photo of the speedo with my dad doing 140mph)
Nissan 200sx (pop up headlights, enough said)

He's not that bothered about cars anymore though :(

Don't really have a documented history of the old mans cars, but from memory, at some point in the distant past he slapped a supercharger on a Hillman Imp, as well as hotrodding other small BL cars - this was around the time when he was working with Vitabread on the Vitamin and they were working on all sorts of crazy conversions to make a very fast mini - http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/vitamin.html - so not a surprise that he was tricking up his own dailies.

In the more recent past
A Mk3 escort that died more times in 500 miles than any other car he owed, even ones he'd done stupid things to (see the above Hillman Imp)
Several BXs and XMs because people were scared of them, which made them cheap
A Volvo 345DL that was solid, but had a 'gearbox problem' - he took a driveshaft with him, offered the guy £50 or something to take it away, jacked it up, swapped the driveshaft, and drove it off the guys driveway.
A TR7 that started life as a V8, but he chucked a four pot block in that he was aiming to convert to a Sprint (he was actively looking for blocks and heads etc). Then he got a garage to do some fuel stuff for him, they flubbed a return line, and it pissed petrol over the hot exhuast. FWOOM.
After that it was mundane stuff (Rover 200, BX, XM, Citroen C4) that he thrashed to death until he himself popped his clogs.

I can’t remember which ones he had, but know there were a couple of minis when he moved up from scooters. Then when my mum got pregnant with me he bought an alfasud as a sensible family car, which is the only one of them I can’t remember.

Green alfasud s1 - my first journey in as a separate human
Black alfasud s1 - written off by a transit early 1983 as my sister was still in a travel cot
Orange alfasud s2 5m ( 5 speed)
Black alfasud s3 ( plastic bumpers )
Ivory alfasud gold cloverleaf - 1.5 twin carb Ti engine in a 5 door hatch body with all the luxury trimmings - Y reg
Red Alfa 33 - c34 vgv
Red Alfa 33 - f254 juf
Red e30 316i 4 door - h609 ele
Red Alfa 146 - n something
Dark blue Alfa 156 1.8 tspark with sports pack t -ref
Metallic red Alfa 156 2.0 lusso 51-reg
Silver Alfa 156 facelift 2.0 04-reg
Silver Alfa spider 2.4 diesel ( 2.0 petrol version felt slower than his old 156 ) 57 - reg
Black s2 TT 2.0tdi Quattro 12 -reg
Black TTS 17-reg
Cheers, Harry
