My alfasud is fwd with a longitudinal engine, not particularly unusual in itself, various Citroen’s, renaults, Audi’s and at least until recently ( still maybe?? ) the Passat.

However a bit of thinking, the Alfa boxer was still being used until the mid 90s in the 145 / 146 in the same longitudinal, gearbox behind fwd layout, but the range topping cloverleaf / Ti versions had a transverse in-line 4 with the now standard gearbox on end layout, so you could at the same time buy both a longitudinal and transverse version of the same model.

The only other vehicle I can think of which turned the engine around was the rover 75, designed for transverse but spun round longitudinally for the rwd v8 versions.

Anyone think of any others? Particularly where they kept the same wheels driven?

I’m no expert, but didn’t the A4 or A6 have both transverse and longditudional versions?

I can’t help on the main question but we’ve had two Passats and they were both transverse engines, so either they stopped 15+ years ago or you imagined the whole thing

Looks like the b5 Passat in the mid 2000s was longitudinal, so I’m not going as mad as I thought for a moment

Escort cosworth, kind of I guess, but it was to allow it to be 4wd, so different driven wheels and wasn’t really an escort underneath at all, with most of the floor pan being lifted straight from the Sierra.

No, they didn’t.

The Renault 21 did though, with different wheelbases depending on whether it was transverse or in-line.

That was more of a rebody of an existing RWD longitudinal platform than changing a transverse to longitudinal though - shortened/modded Sierra floorpan IIRC.

Yep, I remembered that earlier when I didn’t have time to add it, but yeah I’ll let the mk5 escort in because you could indeed at one point but both longitudinal and transverse 4x4 versions, even though the cosworth wasn’t really a cosworth

The A4 and A6 have only ever used longitudinal engines, never transverse. They also therefore get the proper Quattro system, whereas the smaller A3 had transverse-only with Haldex 4wd.
