Budget: £7.5k

It looks like the time for one of my cars is going to come to an end soon and it’s most likely going to become someone else’s first car or something. It’s been with my dad for over a year whilst his has been off the road and it’s looking like his car will be back on the road at some point in the near future.
This gives me a unique opportunity to swap to something different and without any real limitations. I’ve got the F-Pace and Mustang both of which have covered all the basis I needed them to for well over a year now and it’s got me thinking what to do when I sell the other one plus I’ll have a bit of cash to put towards whatever it’s replacement may be. I’ve browsed mk3.5 MX5’s today and £7.5k seems to get a reasonable one, as much as I’d like to try one for a while it doesn’t really scream different or interesting. Back in years gone by a 205GTi would have been that price, a stretch up to £10k might have bagged a 911 or M3. Maybe even a decent shape Capri (although in the next paragraph I rule out rust buckets...)
So, given up to £7.5k in cash, no requirement other than it must be as interesting and as evo as possible with no sheds or the need to do major work on something (rust, completely knackered mechanicals etc but happy to do wheel refurbs, get the paint work polished, not overly fussed on something with an acceptable amount of stone chips for its age) and bonus points for finding something which has already had the money spent on it by someone who’s just looking to get rid of an old project what would you be looking at?

Why so coy about this other car?

Or spend £2-3k on a ready-built targa car and come rallying

I’m not being coy, I’m explaining the situation. The car itself is irrelevant.

Stop it!

I did wonder about something motorsport related so it’s not off the list

Have a look at the targa rally buy & sell group on Facebook. There’s often cars for sale and Getting one that’s already caged etc is much cheaper than building it yourself.
A tow bar on the Jag, a grand or so for a trailer and you’ve still got cash left for some tweaks to get it just how you want it.

I was gonna suggest a Porsche 924/944. Then I realised that they
start at £7.5k these days.
What's to stop you spending, say £3-5k on something older and interesting (you clearly have an itch...) that's a little ratty and then spend the money sorting the rust on it?
Say, and E36 328 coupe or something?
I mean, it'd need you to know a good bodywork/welding chap who could assess it.....
*checks prices of E36 328s*
Oh
god damnit
Just buy an MX5 and be done with it

Yeah I’m thinking I can wait and pick up something that’s already been done, no one gets their money back on those sort of things.
I’ll go and have a look at the FB group and see what it’s about. I was also thinking of sprints and hill climbs in a hot hatch of some form. Clio 182 cup maybe?

It’s hard isn’t it

I remember when Alfa’s and such like we’re decent at that price, there was plenty of choice

Corrado vr6 would probably get my money. I wouldn’t spend the full 7.5k though, I’d leave a couple left over for another e36 compact.

An older (probably late 986 but maybe early 987) Boxster S?

Go full barge and get an XJ/S/7-series/A8/LS4x0/Phaeton.
V8s aplenty and maybe even a V12 option.

Idle browsing and always wanted try one, not because it’s a convertible but because it’s supposed to handle well. Then I got onto what else is out there because MX5’s are good but there’s other stuff.

I fancy a V8 Jag XJ, and the turbo MR2’s that used to race (still race?) always looked a riot
That 205 is questionable though

I’ve never really felt the ‘want’ for those

I’d go for an Alpina B12 if there was one in budget that was in reasonable nick. I’ll go and deflate shelf rapidly on autotrader now...
Edit: fucking hell
