There's lots of Lego love but is there any Meccano love? Seems a lot cheaper than Lego.
Just got this for my boy and me to make as a cheap intro to see if he likes it (ok, the girl can have a look in too if she wants to - but she's not the one obsessed with dinosaurs).

I have an original '10' set in the drawers from 35 years ago. Also a Mamod steam engine, electric motor with inbuilt gearbox, another bigger electric motor and loads of original Meccano mags with instructions to make stuff.

I wasn't allowed to play with it when I was too young so I didn't spoil it.

I’ve a couple of steam engines which still run, but they could do with new pistons lathing out because there’s steam blowing past the cylinder walls, some rust treatment and some paint. I’ve not wanted to touch them though as they’re working originals.

I had a big meccano set as a boy (I think it was a crane), but I always found it frustrating in comparison to technic lego so I built it once and gave up IIRC.

It's probably in my mum's attic somewhere still.
