I’ve just attempted to erroneously inhale <food or drink item> . My body is now attempting to eject it from my airway.
What solution is a glass of water intended to provide in this scenario?

Was it suggested by your wife? Mine does that.
I think it's an attempt to make you drown while you worry about choking
