FAO Kiwi Dave... :)

What do you think if this to share across a Canon EOS 620 FF film camera and an APS-C sensor’s 650S giving approx 56 mm equivalent

Canon EF 35 mm f/2 IS USM Lens - Black

I haven't used one personally but I find the 35mm focal length my far my most used lens on my images. The idea of a smaller one has always appealed. At one point I nearly bought a small digi body and a 35mm just to have as a small thing all the time, then almost bought one of those Sony RX100 where you can't remove the lens. Then I reminded myself I barely take photos and it would be a waste of cash.

I digress. Any 35mm lens on a FF body is awesome. One that's small, has IS is moreso. And 56mm on a crop body is a useful length - why not?

My 40mm pancake lens lives on my 40D. Nicely compact and pretty sharp imo. Doesn't go to f/2 and no IS but still, f/2.8 isn't bad and < £200.
That would make the 35mm hard to justify for me, but if you don't have one of those already then the 35mm sounds like a good option.

What about this dinny_g, one of the better rated lenses. No IS but don’t let that put you off.

Creeping up on focal length there, especially on a crop sensor.
I have an old one that doesn't work very well anymore. For £99 I should just get a replacement but again, having the pancake lens makes it hard to justify. That and the 70-200 f/2.8 seems to cover my DSLR bases, with the GRII at 18mm for wider shots.

Agree with the comments on the usefulness of 35mm lenses. For £500, however, I would (and did) buy a very good condition 35mm 1.4 L Mk 1. No IS but in most situations you don't need it as at f1.4 it lets in twice the amount of light as an f2 lens (remember, the f-stops are logarithimic with regard to light capturing ability).

My go to on an APS-C camera for a long time was a 30mm 1.4 Sigma which produced beautiful Bokeh despite being less than 100% on focusing.

:D You reminded me of several attempts to use my 70-200 on a crop sensor in a photo studio. No, can't step back any further, there's a wall in the way, best make it a head and shoulders shot instead, or change lenses.

So effectively your focal length at the short end is 112mm - you'd need a pretty big studio for a whole body portrait!

I've been having lots of fun with mine on the 620 FF body.

I have a 620 too. Only point of advice is beware the sticky shutter issue - see below:

Valid comments.

My own 35 is a MkI 35L - it has notable chromatic aberration but is fucking divine. Frankly I'll only swap it out for a MkII, and even then it might be as well, not a replacement.

The 35L MkII, the 85L IS, 11-24 and a few more of the L series TSE lenses are the only ones I still want. But I can borrow the 11-24 and the TSE lenses from work currently so not an issue.

I just had to go and look up chromatic aberration.

I think you could do better from eBay. They look to be an extra 10-15% more expensive just for MBP's profit margin and you aren't getting any warranty with them.

Other than overall condition and coming complete with box, hood, leather pouch, etc. you need to keep an eye out for the centre pinch lens caps which signify it is a more recent production run.

I'll be honest, I have been looking at second hand 35mm L's and they are indeed within the same price range but I'm just looking for a small, light, half decent prime which is something I'm missing (85mm Macro aside)

I am going to get a full frame body some time soon and I've sort of factored a new lens into that purchase. Ideally the 24-70 F2.8L with IS but I might defer that and get an Prime L then.

One upside to Covid is I have money to spend on this.

Just saw this - will watch for that.

My father in law bought it from new and used it extensively until failing eyesight meant he couldn't focus through the eye piece. Then it came to me. I don't think it has put a foot wrong which is I understand pretty typical of Canon products of that vintage. (But I may be wrong - he always spoke of it being bullet proof.)

eBay is hit and miss though, MBP you know what you’re getting.
