OV9

Just wondering if there's any good online resource for playing the guitar that people have used? I played bass growing up and have some basic chords so can look at tab and music and work stuff out and strum along (titter ye not), but that's just aping stuff rather than knowing how to play.

There's obviously loads and loads of stuff out there, but where do you start? Any ideas?

This is now my 1st lockdown mission, my second being a screenplay idea which I've been meaning to write for years. I suspect the guitar will be an easier nut to crack.

I like Marty Schwartz stuff on YT.

I still enjoy "Rocksmith" - it's like the old RockBand/Guitar hero games, but with a real guitar. If you're not careful it can lead to bad habits but it's a fun accompaniment to traditional lessons to improve muscle memory and speed with the mini games, plus you can play along to your favourite tracks on different difficulties.

It's about £30 with the "Real Tone" cable that's required.

The Mrs has recently started using the Fender tutorial things to reasonable effect so far.

I used to play bass too. My youngest taught himself via web/YouTube and likes metal over other genres. Within 3 months he was better than I had ever been - loves technical stuff. Is now extremly good with pick, slap and fingering (stop sniggering at the back).

He then decided to do the same with guitar, and is also now rather good at that too. The wee smartarse.

In that playlist, the "you don't know which chords go into every key" is a good video for beginning to experiment with your own chord progressions

For learning specific songs, i'd check out Songsterr.com (click 'old songsterr' to get to an older-looking but more user friendly website) as it has a mixture of tablature and rhythm; Ultimate-guitar.com is a common resource for newbies tabs but it's basically just text with no rhythm

For solos etc there are a few good people on youtube too who are also good for this; the most obvious examples are Chris Zoupa and "guitarlesson365song"

Another good guy who does mostly bass stuff - but also has a lot of theory is TalkingBass

And all-guitar-chords.com is a good resource for alternate voicings

The best advice for learning an instrument is to pick a song that is well out of your comfort zone and set it as your goal. Try it now, then try it again in a few weeks, and just build on techniques, speed and dexterity til you get there. A good goal for beginners might be something like Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California or something along those lines where there's some basic fundamental techniques that are tricky for new players

I’m really enjoying the Fender lessons, they’re just what I needed and are filling in the blanks if that makes sense. I think they’re also just reinforcing the fact that I need to complete those then just practice, practice, practice. And then look at the other links you’ve all provided and start to learn the rhythm pieces for songs I know and start to learn some of the main riffs - also as suggested above.

Its also given me a kick up the backside to get the bass out again too so I’m really enjoying it all.
