New 1 series

Back from Cambridge seeing a client and spotted a couple of the new 1 series on the road. Not very easy on the eye is it? Fine from the back (a bit new 3 series touring in fact), but the side profile is all kinds of wrong, and it appears have a very pinched nose as well. Seems to be trying to copy some of the design of the current A class, but that's not very well proportioned either.

It’s been around for a while, but you’ve all probably mistaken it for any other hatchback

Oh, that thing.

I’ve seen one or two new shape ones about but nothing like the numbers I’ve seen of previous generation 1 series.

Saw one following a previous gen one last week and it just highlighted everything that was wrong with it. BMW have really lost the plot in design terms again.

Only BMW current designs I like are the 3 Series Touring and M5. The rest, they’ve lost that subtle aggression in their lines. Far too shouty now.

I saw one for the first time yesterday and didn't think it looked too bad, all things considered. I've no urge to swap mine but I wouldn't mind a go in the M135i to see what it's like with AWD and a 4 cylinder engine.

A chunk slower and less interesting to drive by the looks of things. I'm going to blag one for a couple of days and see.

That’s what the car market needed, a little less individualism and choice.

How many of the hundreds of thousands of people who bought 118i and 118d for every 135/140i sold actually cared what wheels were driven?

I do not like their decision, but can 100% understand why they have done it.

You’d think that by going to a more modular and cheaper platform BMW would pass on the benefits to customers but the fact that it’s even more expensive now shows that they’ve done it to beef up their bank accounts.
They’ve essentially come to the conclusion that 99% of people who drive a 1 series are NCGs thus they will not notice an inferior drivetrain, we can charge more because let’s face it, people will buy a turd with a BMW roundel on it and make more money per unit sold.

The 240 is going in next week to get an exhaust rattle looked at on cold start. They have promised to lend me a new G20 3 series for the day. Although i have a suspicion its actually an F30 as the service advisor said it was a 335d but then in the next breath said it was brand new so we'll see what i end up with.

However back on subject the new 1 in M135i guise doesn't look too bad but the omission of the 6 walloper in lieu of 4x4 and 4 wallopers is definitely an interesting strategy shift. Although I loved my Golf R. Would like a go in one to see what its like.

As a 118d its probably an very nice car. I had the X1 with the 3 cylinder 18d engine as a courtesy car. I was very impressed with the new 3 cylinder diesel. A lot quieter and more refined than the 4 cylinder in our F31 318d Which in itself isn't bad.

Yes. It's plenty quick enough and is too far away from being a track weapon to try and bother making it into one.

Love it to bits.

That is an entirely accurate description!

Even after nearly 50k in mine I don't feel like it needs to be any faster for use as a daily. Tyre choice has made the biggest improvement along with better brake pads. They are a cracking little car.

I've got 13k on mine now - what tyres have you got on?
