Wife just called to say that someone had reversed into the O/S front. Looks like it'll need a new wing and arch liner. I'll take a closer look when she comes home.

Car was parked in front on my S-i-L's house and the other driver is a neighbour, so hopefully no issue this time round. Details have been exchanged.

Quite annoying!
Grrr.

'cos a Ford Galaxy is easy to miss in your blind spot when reversing
It is Panther Black, so obviously blends in against a green hedge...

My current 981 GTS passed its MOT with no issues yesterday, but the intermediate service bumped the bill up to £1018.01p.

And fit an LS1 ? Nice 8-)
God no

Strip it a bit, some nice suspension, nice brakes, good seats and harnesses and some improved headlights etc. I miss tinkering.

I found the 997 very heavy feeling and wasn’t impressed but the first 996 I drove was surprisingly good. I have re-read the poppopbangbang thread a few times plus the lightweight CSR one and like the efficiency of them. 300hp keeping up with much more powerful cars.

But maybe I’ll fall in love with my Merc again. Hopefully it gets me back into cars again.

Qashqai is through its MOT. Failed on front suspension arms again - the guy's face fell when I mentioned they changed those 12 months/6k ago. So those were comped under warranty. Crap aftermarket stuff. Rear sus arm had a big rusty hole in it, so they have welded a patch over that. Not an expensive part at ~£100 for pattern, but it incorporates the hub connection, spring seat, the lot, so a lot of labour involved in replacing it, and I'm getting too old and lazy to lay underneath cars. Total cost of £118 incl. the test fee. Advisory on the rear tyres and after two Cornwall trips aquaplaning in stormy weather I have relented and bought a couple of Bridgestone Turanza T005 part-worns for £80 delivered. I have T001's on the front.

The shortlist for replacement is a ~2015-ish XC60, a facelift 2017-ish X-Trail or a 2012-ish Freelander 2. We need a bit more space as the kids will both be teens soon. I think we are leaning towards the Nissan, for mpg reasons as much as anything. May run the QQ for the winter now as it's depressing running a 'nice' car on mucky winter Lincolnshire back roads.

Navara put me off Nissan, too much of the Renault shoddy build and cheapness in them now. Outlander another option maybe?

Impressed with the pair of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (not 4S) which I fitted to the front wheels of the Merc - amazingly confidence inspiring in the streaming wet. The Pirelli P-Zeros on the back mean I light up the rears rather regularly even when I’m trying not to... I suspect the winter tyre set is going to be very necessary as soon as we get close to overnight frosts. The question is which weekend of this month I put them on.

It still has an oil pressure sensor fault, but I haven’t fitted the replacement yet, so that might not help that I still have an issue.
Unfortunately it hasn’t completely solved the problem. It no longer goes into limp home mode, but has an occasional rough idle when coming to a stop which then goes away after about ten seconds, or the idle is perfect and the EML and engine symbol comes on.
My eBay diagnostics tells me it runs lean on two banks when this happens, so perhaps I have an air leak. I’ll do the oil sensor and have a better look at it, or throw it at my mechanic because I’ve got no time.

Gummi pfledge to the door and boot seals has eliminated most of the creaks.

The 4” rip in the drivers seat was sorted today - it cost 20% of the purchase price of the car...
New foam in the bolster, new leather panel, shrink and reconnolise the whole seat.
This and a new ZHP gear knob have made a massive difference to how fresh the car feels when you get in it.
I hadn’t found time to look at the car again, or get it to my mechanic, so have it to a garage that I can almost see from the front of my building, but haven’t used for years.
They found and fixed two air leaks using a smoke test, fitted my oil temp sensor and put it on the ramps to have a quick check over. £100.
Two short runs and it seems cured, so money well spent.

My Series III Land Rover is almost m.o.t ready, more than five years after it came off the road for a new chassis...
The garage has had difficulty with the carb, a twin choke Weber unique to a 2.5 90/110 that was no longer made when the car went off for a rebuild, but they’re now back in production, so I got one this week to avoid messing around further with the old one. The engine is supposedly a bit smokey, which is hopefully just a stuck piston ring that will free off - it only has 39,000 miles from new, but the last guy working on it didn’t put any oil in the engine or turn it over for two years after I did a strip downIt’ll need paint next.

New fan control unit fitted to the Galaxy. Took less than five minutes to do. Fans now turn on and off. Less than £100 all in, compared to the quote for nearly a grand from the first garage, which would have replaced a lot of perfectly fine parts to replace one broken one.

Will also buy a code reader, so I can see for myself.

Need to tell someone that while replacing the distributor cap and rotor arm on the Merc, I rounded the bolts holding the rotor arm on as they were ancient. Bugger.

I then put mole grips on them knowing I was about to properly muller it, and the mole grips WORKED and I got the bolts out. Stunned

I replaced the pads on the other side of the Mito earlier and also rounded the bolt removing it, I used one of those gimmick tools which claims to remove any size bolt and it worked  Also judging by the amount of force it took to wind back the caliper I reckon this one is on its last legs too but I threw more lube into it than you find in a whole Ann Summers store and seems to be alright for now.

Up GTi owned for exactly 12 months to the day and after ~10k miles.

16's have improved things hugely for ride comfort, easy 55mpg and it's been faultless. However now I'm spending almost 2 hours a day in it, doing more motorway miles and also needing to move stuff for work that doesn't fit in the boot.....it's now a little out of its comfort zone. Unfortuantely a pending house move means it'll have to stay for now.

If it’s the same one I use then you need to make a special tool. Just file down the end of the, I think 4mm, Allen key or socket and you get the drive part in another mm or so which really helps.

The torque on them is tiny and yes the Bosch ones are made of cheese.

I did wonder as the 3mm turned in no time. Water had been in there though and the bolts were in a sorry state.

First weekend away in the D3 this weekend.
350 miles on half a tank, it reckons 38.1 MPG which may be optimistic but I've got 290 miles of range left so it seems pretty good on fuel.

Its very floaty, even when loaded up, but it does stick mostly in the dry, the exception so far is if its raining and you try go round a mini roundabout above 20 mph in which case it understeers badly 😂

Its great at eating miles, less comfortable seats and more noise than the S60 but it rides much better, also surprisingly easy to overtake slower cars due to how far you can see in front over hedges etcs.

Climate seems very quick acting to cool, and to heat, fuel fired heater will help quite a bit there though.

Heated seats front and rear are welcome by all as well!

Replaced the Porsche Club Sport steering wheel that was fitted to the car when I got it with an OEM version. Looks so much better.

Image

Taking it into Strasse on Wednesday for a new cam belt, tensioners and water pump. After that I'm going to do a full refresh on the vacuum lines and tackle the sizeable list of jobs I've got.

When my car is painted I shall drive up and we can go full geek and take some pictures. Absolutely love this era of German cars.

So if anyone has an E34 3.8 Touring and an Audi RS2 can you come and join

Been quoted about £500 to fix the damage on the Galaxy. That includes a new wing and sorting out two other scrapes.

Bought a replacement N/S mirror to replace the broken one.

And found a nail in the N/S rear, about an inch from the edge. Been told that can't be patched, so now need a new tyre.

All in all a mixed week of motoring!

I truly believe if you looked at a car it would simply burst i to flames.

Have you wronged in a previous life ? Punched a puppy or sworn at an old lady ?

Your luck with cars sucks!!

I was the driver for the nail in the tyre. The other two incidents was while my wife had the car (although she's blameless in both situations).

Just the joys of owning a car i suppose.
