ah, ok. we have a dehumidifier already - maybe should have bought a combined dehumidifier/AC unit at the time.

It's not as practical as a dehumidifier as it's basically just running the AC compressor at full power the whole time. Handy if you need to dehumidify during the summer as it will conveniently cool the room, not so good if you're using it in a slightly damp house or garage mid winter

I’m beached at home with the ‘rona and really hoping I can return to work on Monday as it’s forecast 40 degrees here Monday and Tuesday.

Plan B is to get in the car and sit there all day with the engine running and AC going….

Ok. Just to warn you. 43C is fucking outstandingly hot. Like core of the sun hot.

It's still mid 30s here right now in Seville and walking out of any hotel, shop, bar etc is a real shock. Like walking into a wall of fan heaters. But not necessarily unbearable

40C in the UK is going to be horrific. So enjoy that I think it'll be hotter in the UK on Mon/Tue than here as it cools here to 36C

All the warnings really make me question how countries which actually get hot survive this every day - makes calling it an emergency seem a bit overblown.
And then there’s the whole infrastructure going to shit.

Not being funny, but nothing here is prepared for it, and the people aren’t prepared for it.

Our work usually runs 5-10c warmer than the outside temperature. When it gets into the high 30s it feels bloody hot, but after a couple of days you do get used to it and it stops feeling quite so awful. I think a lot of the problem is our heatwaves only last a couple of days so people don’t really have a chance to get properly used to it and learn how to live with it.

It still amazes me that every summer councils regrade the roads with tar and chippings which without fail melt, break up and make an awful mess leaving the road worse than before it was resurfaced as soon as the temp gets close to 30c I think that’s probably the thing that annoys me the most about our basic infrastructure not being able to cope with hot weather

It reminds me that the best weather I lived in was Medellín, Colombia. 27° during the day and 15° at night, without fail. It was hot enough to live in jeans and t shirt, then cool enough at night to sleep really comfortably. Never once did I need to do the English thing of “ooohhh, shall I take a jumper in case it gets chilly later?”

This air con unit is a godsend, it's dropped the temperature in my office from 29º to 23º

I was gonna do some work on the car today. Then stepped outside and thirty degrees ain't manual labour temperatures for me....

There's harvesting afoot and now the wind is blowing in my general direction. Mmm, dusty. Saw the moon rise (and a couple of planets), it's currently shining out from behind cloud that's hiding its face, would make for excellent pics if I had something that could take them 19° atm, one lower than the forecast

Best of luck guys, I'd be amused but I know how miserable even moderately warm temperatures can be in UK because of building design and environment.

Funny thing about tarmac, went to an Aussie alpine rally years ago in the summer and the road was literally melting and tearing apart from the semi-slick tyres in 40+ degrees.

Have some great photos of a Toyo R888 tread imprinted in the braking zone.


Next day our tyres being coated in now solidified bitumen made for an extremely sketchy descent and a hideous mess in the wheel arch!

34 locally, inside walls of the house are already 26deg.

I think the car will be used as an air conditioned break room today.

39 would be fugly.

Currently walking home from the office and it’s already hot as balls. Wearing shorts and t shirt and I’m still sweating.

The buildings are different - light-coloured render to reflect the light (and therefore heat), smaller window apertures with shutters. People's routines are different, being based around early morning and evening when the temperature is not at its peak. They have more shade outdoors because they need it - e.g. trees lining the road in France, not just there to look pretty.

It was showing 17c when I left home this morning at 0650. Took the EV as it has AC (can't face bike gear at 30C+ later).

Office AC is working so well we've asked Facilities to turn the temp up a touch

But at the moment I've got my feet so close to the gas heater there's the smell of crackling.
