A view from people who actually know what they’re talking about:

With all the evidence, not only did Vettel fuck up, he made a song and dance out of lying about it...

That would be a reasonable conclusion. No sympathy at all now.Rich B wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2019 8:05 am With all the evidence, not only did Vettel fuck up, he made a song and dance out of lying about it...

Well it gets everyone off Seb’s back doesn’t it. Instead of everyone criticising him for losing another race from cracking under pressure they can cry about the FIA. Seb lives another day where he will doubtless make another stupid mistake.

Another way to look at it is if someone just cut that chicane every lap, would they gain a significant advantage? Yes, as long as they didn’t break anything.

I don't think that's the case - he only gained the advantage because LH had to slow sharply to avoid an accident. Now in hindsight, if it appears he has made a manoeuvre to cut LH off, then fair enough regarding the punishment and he clearly gained an advantage by forcing LH to sharply back out of it.NotoriousREV wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2019 10:48 am Another way to look at it is if someone just cut that chicane every lap, would they gain a significant advantage? I don't think anyone would gain a significant advantage by cutting that chicane ordinarily though - I'd expect a loss of time compared to going through the chicane. It's not like it's tarmacced. Would be interesting to know what SV's lap time was compared to the previous couple of laps.

Line it up before the corner, let it bounce across the grass, you’d be miles quicker than braking for the chicane.

Re: No F1 thread?
That would be a different reason for the one they gave the penalty for. It’s simply because Vettel didn’t rejoin safely (leave a cars width) when rejoining as seen clearly in the first picture of the Autosport link.

Re: No F1 thread?
Arguably even that's the wrong offence though, given the Autosport review of why he was penalised. He rejoined the track out of control (not much you can do about that in some instances) and gathered it up.
The pressing of Hamilton and forcing him "off track" immediately followed that, supposedly when SV had the car back on the circuit and under control.

Re: No F1 thread?
Most ex/current drivers are saying the penalty was harsh. I'll go with their opinions.

It’s not hard, he chose to try and drive Hamilton into the barrier after he ran out of talent and drove off the road. Then he paraded about like a spoilt child because he got called out on it.

Because they'd all have done the same thing. That doesn't make it within the rulesAlex_ wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2019 11:50 am Most ex/current drivers are saying the penalty was harsh. I'll go with their opinions.

Also I wish to add that the 2019 Canadian GP was probably the most boring one.

I didn't see the race, heard about the penalty and watched the clip. Seemed very obvious to me that he rejoined in an unsafe manner; if you drive off the track then you can't just swerve in front of drivers who are following the racing line.Rich B wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2019 12:04 pm It’s not hard, he chose to try and drive Hamilton into the barrier after he ran out of talent and drove off the road. Interesting, I hadn’t seen that. Either way I fully agree with you and Rich B. Had the shoe been on the other foot Mercedes would be unhappy about it but accepting and everyone would say it was a deserved penalty.NotoriousREV wrote: Sun Jun 09, 2019 9:26 pm As someone on Ask Crofty said, he fucked up the corner and was able to rejoin without losing a place. Surely this is the same as leaving the track and gaining an advantage? Despite his mistake, he ended up being quarter of a second faster than Lewis on that lap.

Did you see what they submitted as significant new evidence? I had tears of laughter, such a shit show all round from Ferrari.
