Your fleet running reports
Re: Your fleet running reports
Looking at shifter options for my 987 and there are a few. Anyone changed theirs in a porker - reading tells me a 997 gt3 is the way to go. A standard 987 ssk is 280 from porsche which isnt too bad but they are apparently awful until warm so that's out.
Re: Your fleet running reports
There’s a guy on the 911 U.K. forum who takes and after mkt kit and fully rose joints it, completely transformed my cars shift and feels OEM..
Highly recommended.

Re: Your fleet running reports
Yeah no ones making a fortune out of them but they a huge improvement, the standard shift is awful!
Re: Your fleet running reports
The OEM 997 GT3 is 180 quid. The throw on mine is good and pretty positive however the side to side movement in gear pisses me off especially stepping out of the cooper s which is fantastic and thats done 40k miles more.
Re: Your fleet running reports
I thought my Carrera was quite good. A bit tight 1st to 2nd when cold but TADTS. It’s long-ish throw but it suits the character of the car. Perhaps the ‘shift quality’ differ from car to car.
I tried a 996 with unknown SSK and that was rubbish. Tried a 996 with 997 mechanism and that was good.
The GT3, is pretty damn good but then of course I would say that.
Re: Your fleet running reports
I drove a mk2 996 gt3 around donington years ago and remember that change being fab. I'd like mine to sound like one too eventually - gt3 plenum, throttle body and 200 cel cats one day. Might have to earn some money first

Re: Your fleet running reports
Similarly, I tried one of those eBay jobbies and it was awful.
I’ve now got a 997 shifter and I’m happy with it. It’s only a slightly shorter throw but what was immediately obvious when I had the old & new next to each other on the bench, was how worn and sloppy the original had become. Just a brand new 996 shifter would have made a big difference.
It’s the same as suspension I guess - very rarely does anyone compare brand-new OEM to uprated, it’s usually old knackered OEM vs. shiny new uprated and the OEM gets (IMO) unfairly slated.
Re: Your fleet running reports
Clocked up 10k on the little Up, and the service is due. Called up VW, who wanted £280 for a service I asked what was due, he said "Oil change and pollen filter" .... for 280? It's about £35 worth of parts and probably about 45 mins on a ramp. For 280 sheets. Good grief.
It *should* still have a service plan, but as I'm not the original owner, I was told they occasionally - and I quote - "Fall off the system" so I won't know until the day before whether it's free or not.
This is why I always use specialists

Re: Your fleet running reports
I’d be amazed if it was just an oil change, an oil change is not a service.
Whether they actually do all the points in the service though is a different matter!!
I wonder how many specialists carry out a service or just an oil and filter change ?
Dave!

Re: Your fleet running reports
Im always surprised by this comment. My 987 had the ssk ordered from the factory and it was the best gearshift I’ve experienced in a modern car.
Re: Your fleet running reports
Just a quick rotation and clean up, if the tyre wear continues all 4 should be on the tread wear indicators at 22,000 miles
Wheels are pleasantly light compared to others I’ve lifted before.

How about not having a sig at all?

Re: Your fleet running reports
Fitted a Carplay kit to the Merc this weekend. It uses the rotary controller because the car doesn’t have a touchscreen, but that doesn’t seem to be a practical problem. It’ll be nice to get traffic and speed camera warnings now
Re: Your fleet running reports
I tried my hand at polishing headlights today, not something i've ever done before but it works a treat.
They weren't terrible but definitely needed doing.
One down...
Both done, much better.
I also scraped all the mud out of the rear wheel arches and treated the inside of the lip around the opening to some rust killing stuff, apparently they're prone to rust around the rear arches and whilst mine is fine now, there were a couple of spots where a bit of surface bubbling was starting to appear so hopefully i've stopped that before it can get any worse.
The steering wheel was off centre so I tracked the front, it was running a third of a degree of toe in so zeroing that brought the wheel back straight. I also measured the rear toe which was high, so I tried to adjust it but it appears the eccentric bolts are seized in the bushes so i'll have to think about that. I'm a superpro dealer so I can get a good price on bushes, I might look at replacing them and the bolts at the same time.
I'm quite enjoying having a car I care about (other than the elise).

Re: Your fleet running reports
A headlight update here too. I've been gradually removing the tat a previous owner had stuck on various areas of the car and yesterday it was the headlight "eyelids" turn to go. To fit these the bumper is removed but as they are only stuck on with trim tape I figured a bit of heat and an old credit card should see them removed. I started the car and left it with the headlights on for five minutes or so and they came off quite easily.
Before
Much better

A vast improvement.
Re: Your fleet running reports
Which one did you go for in the end? A friend has tried a couple in his W212 E Class (Similar to your CLS) which varying results.
