I remember seeing quite a few of these around Las Palmas. An orange one with a full cage, door bars the lot. Must have seen at least 4.

Weren’t these very cool but ultimately crap to drive

It was basically a Mk4 Golf R32 underneath. I think the consensus was that it wasn't fast or special enough for what it cost new.

I guess you could make it a bit better now as there are plenty of mods for the R32 that should fit the beetle too?

The Mk4 Golf R32 was basically a Beetle RSi underneath - the Beetle preceded it, didn't it?
