Probably sacrilege to some around here but Rutledge Wood has got himself a LS swapped RWB 911 and I love it. Apart from the wheels, which are too big.

Definitely needs wheels an inch or two smaller and more tyre sidewall.

Looks great! Love the colour and ducktail. But yeh... I don't get the point of LS swapped 911s but each to their own.

Weirdly I don't mind the wheels. Maybe the contrast centre coloured split rims make them look smaller to me than an equivalently sized one piece or one colour wheel.

The LS swaps are quite popular over there because they’re cheap, will make as much power as you want fairly easily and are about the same weight as the flat 6 iirc.

The only issue usually is packaging but I guess it’s not so much of an issue if you’re cutting the car up anyway.

Looking at the dogs dinner hoovie made of his 996 LS swap, I'm not sure it would actually end up being cheap if you were to really do it properly - though maybe it is easier on an earlier car with less to deal with in the way of electronics.

Its interesting re the weight point - I was thinking about this some more in the context of the posts with Mik re the Evora weight distribution. I would guess that you still make the handling incrementally worse as the V8 is longer than the flat 6 (IIRC Hoovie had to cut apart part of the cross-member behind the rear bumper to get it to fit - so you're moving the weight further back still.

To be honest its more that it doesn't suit the character of the car rather than anything else. It'd be like putting a cross plane cranked V8 in a mid engined Ferrari.

ETA: I think looking at those pics again too, the only way you make it fit in a G-series or earlier body is to rip the back seats out so maybe it isn't so rearward biased after all... but now only a two seater and mid-rear engined!

Aye, looking at the build pics he posted it looks like he took the back seats out and moved the engine into the car more. Wood is a bit of a hot rod fan so he probably just liked the idea of sticking a big V8 in it.

I love cross-plane V8's, but the flat-6 makes such a unique (and awesome) range of sounds, I don't think I could do it.

It’s because nearly all 911 engines sound like a wet fart, don’t make that much power and have many flaws.

Only the special engines get me interested, a regular 911 I’d rather have a v8 in the back.

Really? I've driven SC, 993's and a few 996's. Nothing newer than that. But they all sounded great.

I’m not a fan of most 911 engines - they usually sound like a bag of bolts in a tumble drier. There are some exceptions which do sound great though.

They sound good from mid revs and great when on it, otherwise I agree they sound pretty bad just going slowly around town.

The 'bag of bolts' sounds is only at idle (and even then only with a quiet exhaust fitted). I think ironically the ones Rich is thinking of as 'exceptions' (i.e. GT3s) are the ones that sound most like that because of the single mass flywheels they're fitted with. They all emit a spine tingling howl at 5-6k rpm and a great burble lower down in the rev range - just part of their inherent character.

As you can see with the precipitous drop off in 718 Cayman and Boxster sales the flat 6 itself would appear to be a large part of reason people buy Porsches.

I don't think I'd do it if I had a nice 911 but if I was chopping one up to do something like that then I think I'd be tempted. Couple of turbos, 800 bhp and a fiery death .

I’m not worked up, I don’t even disagree or want an argument - I just wanted to see the evidence of boxster sales falling off a cliff because this place is famous for making up stats to support views!
