I'm not sure estimating the distance from that image is reliable, Mik - the camera clearly distorts for a wider field of view. Handlebars on a flat bar bike tend to be 780mm wide now, so 40cm from the edge of the lane looks unlikely anyway. Whatever, the Highway Code now says you should give 1.5m clearance when passing cyclists and that was nowhere near 1.5m as the car draws level.

We have successfully achieved disagreement. Another 5 points each.

The bike in the video has drop bars, which will more likely be 4-500mm wide..

Bloody hooligan cyclists - they should have slowed before the park exit and expected a pedestrian to appear. No consideration for other road users...

Not blaming the cyclists in any way but as a vulnerable road user i wouldnt be going for the ninja stealth look

Regents Park on a weekend morning is full of cyclists dripping head to toe in Rapha gear on all-black £10k bikes. I take great pleasure in overtaking them on my £150 Ribble Audax with panniers

This is one of my pet peeves. They get very indignant about it too if you ask why. I've had arguments about it where they have no interest or even sense of responsibility about making themselves be easier to spot as they see it all being on other road users (car drivers) to see them regardless of lighting conditions, time of day, background etc.

It's 100% the cyclists fault...

If car drivers are now expected to drive ultra defensively, to anticipate what cyclists might do and where they may appear and think "cyclist" all the time and in the event of an accident, it's almost always the drivers fault.

Then the same applies to cyclists and pedestrians.

Those two cyclists did NOT take care and take steps to reduce the danger they posed.

Cycled into the city and back for a meeting. Well, a haircut. Everyone is a zombie today. Countless cars cut me up from both directions, turning across the cyclepath into a sideroad without noticing me. I was weraing high viz too. Pedestrians around Fenchurch street, as always, were stepping off the pavement without looking etc.

The first incident, just half a mile from home was a dude who overtook just after this junction. I always take a defensive position here and ride around 1 metre from the kerb as the potholes you can see in this (2 year old) image are now 6" to 9" deep.



After the crossing I immediately pull back in to be nearer to the kerb, however the dude behind me had already taken offense and proceeded to overtake so close that I was able to knock on his passenger side window without deviating from my course. Then he pulled up in front of me for a chat. He then got out of his car and continued shouting accusations and threats at me as a small group of crackheads gathered watching Here's a short clip. I never bother arguing but he actively wanted to shout at me so I let him.

He appears to think you need a tape measure in order to tell the difference between 150cm and 15cm.
