And Whatsapp. Some common part of their shared infrastructure is quite clearly fucked.

I may have taken advantage of this. Images weren't loading, but previews were...

CloudFlare had issues yesterday, caused all manner of aggro for us. Wonder if they use it too.

I doubt it, seeing how only FB/WA/IG were affected. Points to internal issues, nothing to do with Cloudflares issues (which were resolved in about 40 minutes)
Facebook build their own custom server chassis (not generics - I mean literally they fab damned near everything themselves bar the actual chips), they won't be using a third party CDN.

However, even for the very largest websites, using a CDN is a no-brainer because
a) they provide the elastic capacity that means you're not paying too much to service an origin that's often not at peak utilisation and, more importantly...
b) they bring your content so much closer to the end user that you get the benefits of performance through reduced latency that cannot be matched, even by the largest origins. For example, we have more than 250,000 Edge servers now and the scale and reach of the platform means that we're just 1 network hop away from 85-90% of the worlds internet users. #LatencyMatters
Oh by the way, even a number of large technology companies and websites who are now claiming to do 'DIY CDN' are actually only buying dedicated capacity and server space on other actual CDNs.

It does a great job of explaining how your phone is not secretly listening to your spoken conversations to deliver you adverts
