I spoke to my colleague again on the way home. He said Mitsubishi L200 are very popular at the moment. Don’t know if you’ve looked at them?

How has this gone 5 pages? The correct answers are in the first couple of comments .

I’d just buy a cheap Hilux or 4runner.

you’re not going to get a cheap off roader without that connotation because that’s who buys them .

Apart from the Suzukis and Daihatsus, they’re bought by farmers wives.

Something without a pick-up bed goes a loooong way to dispel the idea that I'm a driveway specialist.

I always associated Shoguns and Daihatsu 4x4s with pikeys - Im sure I remember the insurance being steep because so many got stolen by them.

You can't insure a Defender in some places (e.g. where Nath lives) due to the fact they can be nicked so easily, or dismantled in minutes if you can't actually drive it away.

Who cares what other people think? I don’t think I’d let a stranger’s opinion influence my car purchase. 🤷‍♂️

The rear leafs make them terrible to drive off road though. They have a rear locker but for Greenlaning it’s not needed.

Dave!

Didn’t Series LRs have leaf springs? Are they really that bad?

I care what I think, which is that pick-ups are for tradesmen. I don't want one.

I'm still interested in a 3-dr Shogun but I reckon a Jimny or Defender is probably the answer. There aren't many suggestions here I'd not thought of already; I did wonder if anyone would have knowledge of the Hyundai Sante Fe or Chevrolet Captiva/Vauxhall Antara.

My wife had a 2005 Santa Fe Diesel and totally reliable, good ground clearance , good towing but permanent 4wd with rear lsd no locking diff or low range.

Ok for greenlaning and farm work but not as capable a Jimney/Defender.

Youre concerned about what others think of a pick up but you’d drive a Vauxhall Antara?!

All pick ups and actual 4x4s have an image problem, I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other either. At the end of the day your battling between being perceived as a traveller, being into incest or a homosexual faux adventurer

Just go test drive a Jimny to see which you prefer. Defenders feel pretty unique to drive and I don’t mean that in a shit way. They’re fun and satisfying to drive on tarmac around traffic too whereas more modern stuff would be extremely boring so it’s got that going for it too.
