I'm not going to be one of those parents, frankly. I've been railing against that nonsense for a long time and don't want to change overnight!
FUCK.
I hope that petard by which you're being hoisted isn't hurting too much

It's bearable but I'd have preferred for it to not have happened in the first place.

Great looking boy JL, he looks like he's fist pumping!
Genuine question (And to all the other dads here). When you knew your lady was expecting, did she already know the sex at that point? Because if she didn't, did you ever admit to yourself that you'd prefer a girl or boy?
I think this is the bit that's scaring me the most - the thought that I might actually have a preference, but then discovering that we'd have the other flavour... I don't want to admit to myself that I (or the O/H) actually have a preference. Is that normal?

We were both sure we wanted a girl, now I’m 100% glad I had a boy and genuinely have no idea why we wanted a girl!

It was finding out it was a boy that got my head in the game with the whole thing - but that being said, I probably would have felt the same had it been a girl, as this was the point the whole thing went from a mistake to a panic to a growing thing to an actual person.
Dead chuffed it's a boy though, because girls are fucking useless.

As we never knew if we'd even be able to have a child we frankly didn't give a flying fvck what sex it would be, nor did we want to know until the day. Given the astonishing process in which life is created, I think everyone should try and look at it that way.
We had a fair idea though, as the specialist team that were looking after Mrs Merv kindly just did a 3D scan of baby's face one day for us on a visit - it looked alarmingly like me, to the extent that if it had been a girl we'd have been bloody worried for her!

Great article.
Thanks guys. My niece (12) and nephew (9) live around the corner from so we get to see them a fair bit. I guess my instincts come from my interactions with them, and I can see the plusses and minuses of both. Obviously we're gonna love whatever we have, no question, and be thankful if they're healthy and happy.

We found out and told everyone (I have ZERO understanding of why people find out and then NOT tell anyone).
That way, his nursery was painted Blue in readiness, his clothes were all sorted, family and friends knew what to get etc.

i don’t think I’ve ever heard of people keeping the sex of their baby a secret from people?

You're referring to before they're born right?

. Not some strange 'not telling you' kind of way once they arrive.

Oh, and I don't recall specifically wanting one sex or the other. But when the second arrived and was a boy I was happy we ended up with one of each.

Yep - although another couple are raising their Son "Gender Neutral" - a few years back I got him a Nerf gun for his birthday. When they expressed their dissatisfaction, I call them out for being sexist...

We had no idea what flavour either of ours were until they came out, and I don't recall having a preference.
One of each is the best way, natch. Obvs when my daughter is old enough to be interested in and by boys I'll have to shut her in a cupboard until she's 30, but apart from that it's all good...
