I saw this and I was curious because I always thought private school was unobtainable for normal folks, but I looked up fees for the local private schools. Turns out it's basically the same was what we pay for four days a week of nursery up to year 2, and not much more up to year 8 (which also includes wrap around).

Still don't think we'd send ours to one as the local state schools are pretty good... good to know it's an option if it wasn't going well at state school for example though.

I know private school hours tend to be longer than state schools but they have longer holidays too. And are the hours long enough not to need any other childcare in term time?

It always struck me that buying a house in the catchment area for an excellent grammar school would be a good idea; more expensive, but no school fees so pay more mortgage. But at the end of it your house has kept pace with the market so you'll get back the extra payments, whereas living in a cheaper area and paying school fees you have to bask in the self-sacrifice.

The wrap around hours are long enough, yeah. The term time thing I'm ignoring for the sake of the comparison TBF so would need consideration if I was thinking seriously about it, which I'm not.

Yeah we were pleasantly surprised tbh when we looked and it seemed like a no brainer. It's about 3/4 the cost that nursery was for 5 days. There's only 1 local primary that ours would have been put in and it's 1.5 form entry increasing to 2 next year. It has a "good" rating but the Biggie for us was them not doing enough to keep the brighter kids pushed on. And that's how trouble starts. We visited and it was carnage in there - kids being taught in corridors and all sorts.

So I went from not seeing the point of private at that age to wholly convinced very quickly. And I went to private school from about 8yrs old myself.

The best bit is they started running a sports club during school holidays for a very reasonable cost and they have a whale of a time doing all sorts.

I didn't as a matter of fact, except for a few years at a prep school (8-11) until my father decided it wasn't a good use of money. I then went to a large urban comprehensive and a grammar in the 6th form. Do you have as wide a personal experience as that? If not, what value do you think you are adding to the discussion?
