I won't be on call 24/7 (for BAU stuff too, not just emergencies) without any kind of cover, as I have been for the last.... Nearly six years now...

And more importantly, despite being a good offer ALWAYS haggle.
careful what you wish for though - it's a fine line! I've hired 3 new guys over the last month and interviewed loads. I was close to offering one guy the position but he (or the agent) were pushing for a higher offer (also made interesting because his old boss works for us so I knew exactly what he was currently on.)
The higher number basically turned him from "yeah, he's worth putting some time onto to get him up to standard" to being "for that money, I want the full article now, and he's not that".

That. I’ve been keen on candidates and they’ve tried to negotiate hard when I know we are competitive….. so I have then backed out. If you are making yourself a pain now, you’re likely to be a dick that I will regret hiring. If you are good - and there is room within your “band” to get an increase due to your performance - then you will.

It's too much of a ballache to explain without getting into details, but the salary is fine. I suggested a tempting (to them, I felt) wedge under the advertised rate, they basically said "no, your CV is great and we like you, shut up and take our money".
So I'm slightly under the advertised base rate for the job, but that'll go up once probation is over and I formally take over the retiring tech leads role.
Also, "playing hardball" with the MD and Commercial director of the company your applying to, in a very nerdy subsection of an already nerdy industry isn't how you get a job with companies like this - trust me on that.

My general approach to salary negotiation is ask for top whack available for the position, receive a counter off at about the right amount, then shake hands. Everybody gets that warm fuzzy feeling like they've been successful in the negotiation.
If you go in asking for the right number you're going to end up with a low offer.
Obviously the scenario could be different depending on how competitive it is for the role, but there's plenty of work in my field so you'd be a mug to allow yourself to be low balled.
Also always lie about your current salary.

I'm sure technically they could figure it out from your tax once employed, but I don't think anyone ever does.

Well deserved Beany.
All salary negotiations should start with a slip of paper slid across a table and then leaning back with your hands behind your head.

The candidate pool must have been poor, I've been made an offer I can't refuse.
Currently sitting in the car in the (current) works car park having a visual migraine from the utter shock.
Or you could flip that logic by saying you are the candidate they've been waiting for, that you have the perfect skills and experience for this role and have found a business who
value you.
Congrautlations and good luck with it
Now... about that couch to 5k

Let's not get ahead of ourselves Gav....
Did some inflation calculator stuff last night, if I'd had pay increases just at inflation in this job, nothing performance related, I'd be on notably nearer this salary (it would start with a 3 at least) and I'd be slightly less inclined to look for a job. I've had a functional ~15% pay cut since I've been here in real terms based on retail inflation, if I've done the fag packet maths right.
But because your expected to fight for a pay rise here cos that's how the CEO likes it, no one does it till they realise they could be paid better staving shelves at Lidl.
And with Lidl offering 13.70/HR for backshift work these days....
Anyway, references are sorted. Just need to pop that over to the potential new car and computer parts sponsors and then I'll work on the next steps.

honestly Bean, Gav is right and this does exist! You've had a run of shitty employers, hopefully this one is a good one!

Only if you assume the company is trying to pay every person the absolute lowest they can get away with. Some do but many don't these days.
I was asked my salary expectation, I gave a number. It was too high for the department head to approve so she got CEO approval and I got what I was asked for.

Literally my current place.
Literally.
One guy got a pay rise by showing that he actually could get better pay and conditions by stacking shelves in Aldi. Not even on a supervisor rate, just shelves and till work....

Well you have to factor in the whole supply and demand transaction, maybe you're just one of a kind.
In general isn't it just good business sense to only offer as much as you need to in order to secure the right resource? Once you know you've got some serious talent on your hands you can always increase their pay to make them feel special, but that's a risk until you've put them through their paces.

Half a day in to a day off and I was already being chased for work.
Apparently it can wait till tomorrow if needs be.
I've got a day off - if it can wait till tomorrow, why are you texting my personal phone today?
Can't imagine why I'm applying for jobs, eh?
