Sadly caring about the environment and welfare in general is a luxury item which most countries can not afford. You need generations of wealth, education and democracy to get to this point and be beyond the point of just working in any way possible to survive which is what most of the world is doing.

Only correct to a point. A lot of it is cultural - some just need a good kick up the arse to change their habits of dumping anything just where they like.

Although I'm sure it's true to say that we're not big contributors to the problem, we do have to lead by example.

Whole life carbon footprint does need to be taken into account though.

Very much this, cleaning up is what the help does.

I’ve had a go at guys who work for us who think throwing rubbish directly on the ground is ok, they look at you funny when you make them pick it up.

If rubbish burning power stations were cheap and efficient it would solve huge problems with waste.

Dave!

Indeed, and there is also the point that UK car/van sales are significant in Europe. The government signalling this move, will motivate manufacturers further to accelerate the development of their EVs, which they will offer to the whole of Europe, of not the rest of the world. So the impact isn't just here, in reality.

Sorry, I don't see that. If we're, say, 8 years ahead of the rest of the EU in this ban then all that means is that we'll miss out on a model cycle of ICE cars that the rest of the EU have. Manufacturers aren't gonna suddenly say 'ah, you got us, we'll just bring this EV out of our pocket early that we were sandbagging till 2040'. Manufacturers are driven by the available technology. A government policy change in a relatively small market like the UK is not going to suddenly accelerate that technology or technological shift for international manufacturers.

If anyone knows about not being underwater, it’s the Dutch. I lived in a 3rd floor apartment in Amsterdam that was 20m below sea level.

Dam Square is officially 2m below sea level and we were downhill from there. About 20% of the Netherlands is reclaimed sea bed.

"The Zuidplaspolder is a polder in the western Netherlands, located northeast of Rotterdam. It reaches a depth of 6.76 metres (22.2 ft) below average sea level."

I suppose they could have dug a 40m deep hole in the ground and built your apartment block in it so your 3rd floor appartment was 20m below sea level???

I'm just going off the reading my GPS used to give. I didn't do a full laser survey.

Pretty sure the Dutch built the palm islands and pretty much most of the reclaimed bits of land you around the world.

No no, you're wrong Mito. "You'd have stopped for a coffee and a slash anyway" and "Elon Musk is the second coming" etc.
