I’d say the only thing we personally pay over and above is private dental for us 4.
I’d feel better if what was given was spent wisely but when you see a team of 4 patch repairing potholes or terribly repaired road sections which have repeatedly failed time and time again, I don’t think it’s a lack of funds that are the issue, it’s wasting what they have.

Raising more taxes won't magically sort the issues we have. It may improve them, but it won't sort them. That's precisely because of the multitude of problems in delivering services. From wastage in the public sector, to private contracting of public services to the vast and inept, to the very basic fact that most public services have been underfunded and poorly managed for decades.Rich B wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:49 amso you're saying it's the government we have that is the issue?V8Granite wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:42 am I’d say the only thing we personally pay over and above is private dental for us 4.

yep, though I'm no economist, but I'm assuming £19bn of cuts won't help sort those problems either?Swervin_Mervin wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 9:46 amRaising more taxes won't magically sort the issues we have. Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
Is Starmer going to raise taxes overall? He likes to remind us every day about how we now have the highest taxes ever, so not sure he'd want to top that unless he sees it as a good thing.
Don't think I've heard any politician talk about tackling the UK productivity problem as a whole either.

Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
no, both parties backed themselves into a corner by saying they won't be raising the main taxes. Which is a bit daft, as judging by the last 5 years "shit happens", whether it's covid/ukraine/etc and the chances are they'll have to break that promise at some point and raise taxes.Mito Man wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 10:05 am Is Starmer going to raise taxes overall? Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
Almost £3 trillion debt is the problem.
Still think investing in the petrochemical industry here is the only way to get out of that problem without 200 years of austerity but everyone has backed themselves into a on paper carbon neutral stance which is only accomplished by importing everything bad from third world shitholes when the reality is that we're still extremely dependent on it for another few decades.
Making lives for everyone difficult for no reason other than to tick a box.

Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
National debt is a bit of a red herring in these discussions imo.
No government has any intention of paying it off, the only reason it’s brought up is to justify more austerity.

Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
Huh? We're currently spending £89 billion this year servicing the debt. That's money that could fix a lot of other problems. Of course it needs to be paid off.

Re: Bye Bye Sunak..
Surely they could find £3trillion if they just got rid of some of the middle management in the NHS and cancelled Netflix?

I didn’t say it doesn’t need paying off, I said that no government has any intention of paying it off.Simon wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 10:34 am Huh? The idea of Angela Rayner having any kind of power gives me the heebee jeebees. She acts like Thatcher pissed on her chips while she was getting sacked down a mineshaft.Rich B wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:49 amso you're saying it's the government we have that is the issue?V8Granite wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:42 am I’d say the only thing we personally pay over and above is private dental for us 4.

They’d lose the unions if they got rid of her though and then they’d really be fucked.
I like her tbh, an actual left wing person is becoming a rarity in the Labour party.

The funny thing is that she’s exactly the kind of success story that everyone who thinks it’s possible to pull yourself up by your bootstraps should be getting behind. But because most people like that are more conservative, they hate her
