Proof of work blockchains are a disgusting waste of resources based on nothing other than greed and I hope everyone involved with them loses all their money.

I know a few that have a fair amount (£tens of thousands worth, or they were a couple of years ago..) but next time I see one of them I’ll ask.

I invested £1000 in BTC around 2018 and saw my investment plummet in very quick order, so I pulled the remaining £500 or so out and swore never to touch crypto again.

I remember discussing BTC with colleagues around 2012 and contemplating putting £1k in this bonkers scheme back then. It closed at £13.50 at the end of 2012, clearly I’d have made a lot of money if I’d have sold at the peak of £51k. The reality is though as soon as I’d doubled my money to £2k I’d have cashed in

FTSE100 basically flat over 12 months but pays about 4% in dividends which AFAIK ETH doesn't ?

A friend of mine was living solely off his crypto income whilst trying to take Boris Johnson to court a few years ago.

Not substantial but my mate made money off Hyperfund (mentioned pages ago and yes it has turned out to be a scam for most), enough to buy a couple of holidays and fund a new kitchen while things were good.
However some of the people he introduced that I also know are down and although they haven't lost until they cash out or it fully collapses it's unlikely they'll get back their original investments. Hyperfund changed the rules on withdrawals from the scheme I believe so you can't keep pulling out the funds as they 'multiply' now I think they knew they were going down so tried to delay the inevitable.

Or, it was the business plan right from the start and need to pretend it wasn't.

You both preach to the converted. I knew it was what it was the first time I looked at it, but checked in here for second opinions to make sure I wasn't being overly suspicious.

I advised my other friends to get their original investments out as soon as they could leaving behind what they had made to build up if they still wanted to risk it. Fortunately the other I know only invested small amounts so relationships there haven't soured but I did rumours of one person in the circle that put in over 100k. I don't personally know that person and haven't asked about them but I'd be pissed. Both at the introducer and myself (for be gulible and being taken in).

I do wonder when it finally goes belly up whether the friend who introduced people leaves themselves open to court action or even prosection?

The only person I know personally who invested and actively promoted Hyperfund was making good money for a while, because she got in early. Bought lots of nice things and an expensive holiday to Costa Rica. However, Hyperfund locked your original investment for a long period (something like 18 months) and also highly incentivised re-investment of profits. She was part of a team who were working to heavily market the project, hosting weekly webinars and promising everyone that it wasn't a Ponzi scheme. They received something like 20% of any new signups' first deposit, so if she'd got someone to put in $10k she'd immediately get a $2k bonus. She moved to America shortly after it collapsed, I never asked if people came at her afterwards, would be interesting to know.
