240PP wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 4:52 pm There’s a thread on Seloc where a guy has applied to renew his HGV licence and filled out the alcohol intake question to say he has 12 pints a week. They’ve refused his application based on that but the DVLA has also taken his car and motorbike licences off him too!

Doesn’t sound right. Can they do that or is he not telling the whole story?
Did he maybe tick 12 pints a night?

That sounds extremely unlikely.

My phone says “Severe Wind Warning”.

I thought it only predicted the weather.

Nah, that sounds fairly likely.

Bear in mind government guidance for 'healthy' alcohol consumption is 14 units a week, and anything above that is considered alcohol misuse.

So he self-reported on a driving license renewal application that from the governments perspective, he drinks to an 'unhealthy' degree.

I can easily see DVLA being pricks about that and it apparently blanket license revocation from self-reporting isn't uncommon:
https://www.forum.drinkdriving.org/thre ... ed.122738/

Plenty more threads like that on there, rather unsurprisingly...although obviously some of those are considered at risk, etc, but point remains - DVLA appear to be only too happy to be arseholes about it.

I should say a lot of my experience on this is from the vicious cunts at Universal Credit - if a civil servant can find a reason to be an arsehole and be 'justified' about it, they absolutely will because in a lot of cases, it's all they have left in life.

8-) I want a 4wd to do a road trip like that someday (assuming no spikes, that'd mean taking another set of wheels & tyres).

I was looking at going to Switzerland/Austria by car this winter but it’s all very confusing in terms of the Alpine region. Looks like almost all the road are shut over winter but then you look at the individual businesses such as hotels and restaurants and they seem open. So how the feck do you get there?

I guess it depends exactly where you're going and the weather at that moment in time. Various roads like mountain passes are seasonal but tend to have alternate routes lower down, snow/weather gates will be luck of the draw like over here, some places you have to fit snow chains if going above a certain altitude (I can't remember where that is). If you've a particular destination in mind you may encounter problems but if just a random roadtrip for Christmas card views you'll be able to go to plenty of places without worry.

The Road Clearing Abilities of the Austrians are off the chart. You probably won’t be able to drive over the high mountain passes but that’s a summer thing anyway.

You’ll be fine. Kitzbuhel is lovely but you will be paying Ski Season prices
