It's definitely not the power supply to the fan(s) but it could be a sensor. I'd be inclined to plug it in and see what happens.
(or maybe check the wiring colours and compare to the wiring diagram in the back of the manual)
Might be the coolant temperature sender? Here it is from the side (but not quite reachable to plug in) and the top.

Except my wiring diagram doesn't say red & black, and googling that show the sensor plugged in directly to the engine, not just an inline thing.
edit: suggestion is the red/black wires are coming out of the a/c compressor, so may have been disconnected by the previous owner deliberately?

I've done about 600 miles in the M340i now and been really pleased with. It's all the car you'll ever need.
Me and my son had a go at launch control yesterday but it is mechanically brutal so going to wait a few more miles before repeating and trying to film it .
The drivetrain on my M140i has stood up to 51k of hard use from 70 miles with no bother. It's particularly good at rolling burnouts. The engine is a peach!!

@Jobbo it's worth asking for an early settlement figure as I assumed there was a fixed formula but our Sorento went back with no charge 3 months early as the calculation which I was told took into account residual/current value was favourable !
Thanks once more to Carl for this suggestion - not only is the early settlement figure below the 50% of outstanding payments I had expected, it's also fixed for 30 days so I can keep the car until 10 April and not pay any more than if I handed it back today.
Having said that, I think it's going to be handed back very shortly indeed; just put a deposit down on a CLS 350 Shooting Brake.

I looked at an ex-lease 530d Touring and C-classes and Golf TDIs but the CLS was so obviously the right choice. Seems like owners take care of them and they’re a bit special in the first place. Easy decision
Oh, pre-facelift because I prefer it, but it also has a spare tyre which is supplanted by an Adblue tank in the facelift version.

I always feel there's something about a fast wagon.

I always wanted the first shape CLS bit they can't tow a thing so I couldn't buy one. My friends dad offered me his CLS500 AMG, 55 Plate and it was lovely, mine for 6k, and this was about 4 years ago!
One of my only car regrets.
Hope it treats you well, they do have a bit of class about them.

The second gem CLS can tow, but only the shooting brake. Mine has a factory fold-out tow bar but I won’t be using it since I don’t have a trailer

Not my photos yet, just the ones from the ad:
I thought I’d found one with aubergine leather but sadly it was sold ages ago and the garage can’t stop eBay advertising it. So the more standard black leather, which feels beautifully cocooned with the black headlining. I did try one with the upgraded Passion leather (semi-aniline) but it’s so thick that it doesn’t actually feel as nice as the standard leather. I also sat in a C-class with Artico; ignore anyone who says you can’t tell the difference.
Hoping to collect it on Thursday, subject to my rather manic workload.

The steering wheel appears to be set to “Routemaster” position?
