I'm still convinced there's commerical motive behind this. Whether that be devaluing AZ for some reason, or looking to undermine the jab such that when we move to non-pandemic status and they put the prices up, they stay in with a chance of competing with AZ (AZ is the cheapest and provided at cost atm, but will increase to make a profit post-pandemic, but would still likely remain by far the cheapest jab).

Even as someone who, for decades, has been convinced of the ineptitude of the EU (as well as corrupt, conniving etc you name it) even I'm not sceptical enough to believe this is wholly incompetence on their part. I'd like to be wrong though - I'd rather it was incompetence than any commercial skullduggery going on.

The Polish have been fairly strong on it (probably riding high after they and Hungary won in their case in the ECJ against the EU over how they recover tax):

It would be nice to be able to travel there this Summer tho. I did think about printing up a batch of cards and selling them to the antivaxxers in case they fancied a trip. It does raise a valid question how do you prove you've had the job? With the business card they give you when you go for the jabs? Easy to make some of those.

Doubt it will happen to be honest - the EU haven't got anywhere meaningful with their proposal (they've only had 9mo to create a simple form), and I just can't see them allowing travel into the EU from the UK even if we do have a vaccine passport system in place.

Der Leyden seemed okay at first, but not covering herself in glory right now. Guess there's just too much entrenched political corruption across most of Europe right now, which is why pretty much every country in Europe has done a shit job of dealing with this pandemic.

VdL is widely loathed amongst Germans for a history of incompetence and then blaming it on others.

And was installed as leader despite opposition from the European parliament who voted against it, so isn't democratically elected in any meaningful sense either.

Listening to Handcock's briefing today reminds me of News Round when I was a kid. What an absolute prick.

Cases seem to be levelling out, I'm hoping that's because of all the testing in schools. Deaths still dropping but dropping at a slower rate than a week ago, possibly inevitable that would happen eventually. It doesn't take much to make me nervous about them changing their mind on lifting restrictions though!

Testing numbers have increased from just under a million a day to about 1.5m, which I guess is schools. So the denominator has gone up 1.5x but the numerator has remained the same, hence a fall in absolute terms (I think!).

Yeah that's kinda how I see it. School testing likely caught a lot of asymptomatic cases, and now the reported numbers will start to drop again (as the _actual_ number of cases was dropping anyway, it's just that we've caught more in the school testing).

Unless of course schools themselves cause more cases, in which case FML. But that's less likely to lead to hospitalisations going up thanks for the vaccination program, and certainly less likely to lead to deaths going up again.

Its funny you should mention shares - I have some RR too they are up from when I bought them, BP I have just got out of as you never know what misery will appear over the weekend. Seems the government plan is going to fall apart at some stage.

I sold my company shares as they we’re in a company sharesave so I didn’t lose anything. I used that to then buy some, I e colleagues who have them still at 1/7th of what they believe ugly them for.

Uk seems to be doing well, but rest of Europe looks like it’s on the brink of turning nasty again. Can’t see holidays being back to normal for a while.
