not that big a deal compared having no actual life. People would rather take precautions long term which are right for them. Locking in your own kid until he/she is 5 or 10 or however these measures are in place isnt healthy - for that there currently is no measure to put on the table.

You can't have it both ways yet. You can't say you want everyone to just get on with life AND expect hospitals to be able to treat people for normal illnesses and not become hotbeds of Corona infection.

Youre absolutely correct. There is no answer. My own is lets just get on with life and those that need to look after themselves get on and do it.

It’s a difficult balance between what we as a society will consider an acceptable rate of people dying. It applies to anything, not just covid but right through to health and safety legislation. Reminds me of a Mitchell and Webb sketch where David Mitchell claims that no one drowning in a canal that year meant too much money was being spent on preventing people drowning in canals and in a responsible democracy, some people should drown in canals.

Obviously, the rate of death we have seen in the past few months is unacceptable: as is (as we have eluded to) the cost (both in finances and opportunity cost).

Hopefully vaccination will lead us to a point where mortality is minimised, but how far that goes isn’t clear. I don’t think we can eradicate coronavirus, no matter how hard we try. I also think that annual vaccination against new strains is going to be important. Doing what Aus/NZ have done with border closures clearly isn’t sustainable in the long run either.

We will all have different opinions on the number of people who we can tolerate dying. My main fears are
A) being debilitated by long covid for years or even the rest of my life
B) a prolonged period of ventilation followed by critical care muscle weakness, PTSD and all the other dreadful sequlae.

Because a lot of people worked hard to make sure nothing world ending happened it was all a big fuss over nothing.
