Which Boxster to get?

On the upside it does have Bose, heated seats and the sports steering wheel which are all nice options...

Yeah, the trim was a bit of a worry but I was able to get a reduced price on the basis of that when haggling. You think the aftermarket nav will hurt it? To be honest being able to plug my iPhone into something is a pretty good deal for me...

The trim will be an annoyance more than anything else. I'm sure you can find replacement parts or get someone to refinish them as its a common problem but its one of those things you'll probably end up living with and annoying you for a while before its done (if you're like me anyway!). It also makes you think - if they couldn't be arsed to get that sorted then what else did they just ignore.

And yes, the aftermarket sat nav is a big put off for a lot of buyers I think. I had a quick squizz through what was online and I couldn't find anything quite in the sweet spot (though there were a few 3.4s at that price which I discounted on account of bore scoring risks). I'd not rush into it and wait for the right 3.2S to come up. It'll be worth the wait.

I also wouldn't be tempted by the very bottom of the barrel cheapest 996s for that price - they'll likely be tired and just a moneypit compared to their overall value. Any 996 worth owning will be closer to £20k IMO.

Caymans are all 3.4s so you'd have the increased likelihood of bore scoring with those. I'm not saying i'd never take a punt on a 3.4 but as the scoring is generally thought to increase with mileage I'd want a pretty low miler with that in the back of my mind (and not a tiptronic definitely as they exacerbate the problem).

Have you just gone to your local dealer?

Go on AT/PH, look for good looking cars with well written adverts that sound like they’ve been done by someone who has cherished their car then go and look at a couple of local private sale 3.2S ones. Don’t just limit yourself to whatever crap the local dealer happens to have had traded in.

No, it’s a local specialist... dealers don’t have anything this low priced! I am attracted by the warrantee etc.

Will keep looking but this seemed the lowest risk option!

I would expect their warranty will only be a third party one with claim limits and myriad exclusions, however.

There are only a few independent outfits out there that provide proper warranties (RSJ Porsche, 911 Virgin, etc.) but they don't sell pork at that price.

If you want a warranty, then you can just buy one (that covers what you actually want/specify, rather than the lowest cost, no choice option provided by the dealer).

It’s just my own opinion/experience, and we’ve chatted about it lots of times before, but low/mid priced cars from Dealers tend to be a bit shit imo. They’re usually trade ins or tarted up cheap buys.

Find a cherished private sale that the owner stands in front of and tells you the history and how much time/effort they’ve put into keeping it tip top. Rather than a guy in a sheepskin coat who’s smeared back-to-black on the dashboard and stuck it on the forecourt with a price tag £5k more than he got it for from the auction.

Very much depends on the dealer. Some specialist go looking for the right cars to buy privately and sell on (rather than buying from auction). That's my personal and actual experience of selling my Boxster to just such a dealer. In reality you should only bother with a dealer who specialises (or at least deals predominantly) in the marque you're interested in.

Since the advent of We Buy Any Car and the prevalence of finance deals, I no longer shun dealers when looking at used cars. Often private sellers have an unjustifiably high expectation of the price they will achieve (see Twitter Boxster bloke above who won't even reveal his asking price ), and buying even from a small dealer gives you legal comeback. And more importantly it gets you access to the cars which have been traded in at a main dealer by the sort of owner who services on the button but which aren't up to the franchise used criteria (too old, too many miles or whatever) which are then passed down to the local independent. You'll never find those cars privately because the people who own them never sell privately.

That was the case with this car. Part ex’d at a Porsche dealer then passed down the line.

One marvellous thing I have discovered is that you can look up any car’s MOT history if you gave the reg number. Discounted quite a few supposed bargains!

Also will need a full bushes and suspension refresh at 110k+ miles to feel anything other than worn out (and the ad doesn’t note it’s been done) so in reality it’s a £15k+ car with that addressed, still has a shit interior and only 15hp more than a 3.2S 987

Even if you wanted a 911, if you only have low teens to spend, your be better off buying some form of Boxster instead.
