As you mentioned an Allroad, how about an A4/A6/Passat quattro fitted with the fixed suspension you can get to replace Allroad air?

Anyone who fits a winch for Greenlaning needs shooting. Silly tyres, lift kits etc for greenlaning is the reason we have so few now as idiots churn it up or go off route all over the verges etc.

That Defender 90 300tdi like Tim said won’t lose you a penny. Also unlike the TD5 era and TDCi era ones the chassis material is far better. The 300 is very well regarded and if looked after will do silly mileages considering the regular stress it’s under. They do have a very regular maintenance schedule you have to keep on top of though.

You need to drive a Defender though as you will either love it or hate it.

Older shape Nissan X Trail?
Was looking at them before getting the Yeti & found loads of videos of them off-roading in the Ukraine or somewhere like that.

Or one of those 3 door Shoguns. I’d go for the older lower mileage one.
Left over crest; tightens.

I dunno. I can think of a few times that a winch would have been useful in Greenland...

Did the 70 series Land Cruiser ever come over here? I've found little more capable than that off road.

I was so disappointed when I clicked that link after your picture 😂
You need to have a nice cup of tea in your car because no Cotswold pub will let you in if you turn up in one.

Dave, I’ve driven a 90 round the quarry last April, as well as a couple of Discos. Loved the Defender; the Discos just felt soft and too big in comparison.

They are peanuts and the Sportrak I bought for my sister in-law was bombproof after 20yrs as a farm car.
Surprised this hasn’t been picked up on. The Fourtrak is sensible money, decent running gear (shared with the Hilux) and capable. They’re at the bottom of the curve with the better looked after ones starting to go up now. Easily modified or bought ready to go for not much more.

I've fond memories of me and the Mrs renting an SJ about 15yrs ago in Skiathos. Brilliant fun crashing around the mountain roads and through some of the streams to find some of the more remote beaches.

Every time I’ve hired SJs they’ve been fun as a novelty for a day of irresponsible off/on road jaunts in Thailand/Greece/etc... not sure that would translate to uk use?

SJ refers to Sundayjumper yes?

I’d love to buy a cheap car for fun - Greenlaneing does seem fun. I’d want something reliable, so would probably buy Japanese..

Or a Defender 😂

The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

Then something like that 300 is perfect. I didn’t see the TD5 as a step forward, beware the internet where the TD5 is a rocket ship which shows a hatch a clean pair of heels.

A long term proposition the 300 is perfect for beardy Defender buyers.

Plus if you enjoyed the quarry drive you will use it far more than you think. Just get the heater cables adjusted as they are cold as buggery when not set right

That looks ace.

I've also rented SJs / Jimnys abroad numerous times. They're aways surprisingly capable.
