I was a boat mechanic all weekend, bit of a pain as the fucker is 150 kms away, so clocked up 600 kms in the two days.
I've developed a mistrust in anyone who proclaims to be a mechanic, oh no wait sorry, they're ENGINEERS these days aren't they. So as per the BMW, KTM and Yamaha, no-one touches the boat engines except me from now on, unless it's work I physically can't do myself. (They're big heavy fuckers - 250 kg each).
We were getting Engine Overheat alarms - armed with an eBay diagnostic cable and software package, and a replacement ECU as the previous one had fried, I set about it. First of all I learnt that it wasn't the engines overheating but the ECU itself, which is water-cooled, except there was no water flow. Which is why the previous one fried!
Eventually traced it a block in a cooling coil in the fuel vapour separator - the ECU cooling water exits through here to cool the fuel down.
Had I left it to the local dealer, he would have gone "oh boss ECU too hot make buyings new ECU" for GBP 2k - seriously I'm so fucked off with these idiots telling me WHAT is wrong without making any effort to work out WHY it's wrong, and never fixing, just replacing.
As it was the replacement secondhand ECU (the previous one had fried the starting circuit, so the engine wasn't.........ah work it out) for a couple of hundred quid and a few hours of my time, and we should be good to go.
I also challenge any local mechani..........ENGINEER to go so full retard on diagnosis that he removes all the engine covers and cooling pipework so he can give each part mouth-to-mouth to see where the blockage is

Wait, you're disappointed someone who went to university learning CAD, finite element simulation, thermodynamics and project management wasn't adequately able to spin spanners on your boat engine?
This morning I'll disassemble the Mrs' Scenic's other door because in a fantastic feat of precision ENGINEERING both front windows failed within a month of each other. Although well outside the warranty period so somewhat OVERENGINEERED.

Not entirely sure what you read there but just to clarify, my post was about people who used to be mechanics but now call themselves engineers.
They know as much (or less) about engineering as I do, but charge me for their time as if they work for NASA.
What did you think you were replying to? I can't get your reply to make any sense at all. Are you drunk?

Put it done to less than coherent irritation about how "an Engineer" is defined in the UK.
I don't have the correct certificate so I'm not and would never pretend to be a qualified mechanic.
The same courtesy is not extended to engineers here.

The guy that rebuilt my bike suspension was complaining that he’s so busy he has to work 12-14 hour days pretty much 7 days a week to keep up. He could outsource some of the work, but he doesn’t trust anyone. He could take on a member of staff, but he doesn’t trust anyone. This is a guy about whom I’ve been unable to find anyone say a single critical word online so he’s probably right.

I’m finding motivation for any essential vehicle work very hard to find lately. Which is why I drove 160 miles for a brake job on my Landy by taking it to Mr Flew.
I’ll happily do work on the wife’s TT but am having a low point in my spannering of late. I’d rather sit in the warm and tinker with toy trains and RC cars.
I shall be building a bench at home, re-commissioning my Tamiya F350 hi-lift and getting my Tamiya Humber working again when I return home.
This weekend I mainly poured Chockfast, moved engines and shouted at workers.

I read JL's post again as I hadn't spotted the quadruple negative either, I understand his comment completely and a free with the sentiment. Plenty places will replace parts until a problem is solved with no real knowledge beyond reading a fault code.

As someone with an Engineering degree - this also has got on my t1ts for many years.

Sweating my arse off in rural Norfolkia.
After disassembly of the Fucking Scenic door I found again it wasn't the regulator ("it's always the regulator" to quote the local mechanic). But the stupid little plastic pulley drive flanges
so probably the whole assembly has to be replaced (as local mechanic would have done to "fix the regulator")
Something to look forward to next weekend.
