Somewhere you mentioned needing 2000rpm to pull away - you don't. It'll trickle away at barely over tickover once you get the hang of it.

Oh, and on my E46 I used BMW Scanner 1.4.0 a lot, it does code reading and a certain amount of coding, works really well.

Yeah, I'm getting back into the habit of using more throttle opening, but at lower revs, to pull away. Haven't stalled it since Thursday.

Does that software require a special cable by any chance?

It’s a dongle that connects to your laptop with a USB lead. And plugs into the cars OBD port. Obvs. Not expensive.

The dongle is not Bluetooth, no. At least not the one I have.

Oh god no. I'm quite happy giving enough of a gently prod to get the car rotating a little in the wet. Any more than that, it requires more lock than I can muster (I tried, on a somewhat more open industrial estate....). rack isn't that quick, and my helmsmanship/wheel-twirling speed is nowhere near good enough for that.

Besides, 99% of the time the DSC and ACS-T A-Level B- will be enabled. Years of FWD has got me into (comparatively) bad habits when it comes to power application - IE when you can see the exit to the corner, mash the throttle - that I'll probably have to unlearn. I'd rather have nanny kicking in, than the car on it's roof. I am getting old now, remember

Never had one before.

I played with a couple of convertibles last weekend and liked the way they looked and worked. That, and they seem to have been better looked after than the coupes I saw, which were all a bit dog-eared.

With DSC on, the E46 just cuts all power the second you get any slip - even an over enthusiastic start would kick it in. Horrible system. Every now and then I’d forget to turn it off on mine then get a big shock when trying to do something silly then finding myself waiting for it to allow me to have power again.

Just turn it off and build up slowly.

Out of interest, what made you choose a drop top?

I didn’t actively choose a convertible Alpina B3S; but the one I found was, hence I bought it. If you don’t care about rear seat passengers it’s not much of a compromise over a hard top E46; a bit heavier and worse rear visibility.

As I say, I had an accidental tankslapper coming off a wet roundabout on the way back from Scarbs, so I'll leave the aids on for a while, get used to where it cuts in etc. Once I've got a grip of that, I'll run without TC for a bit, and save disabling all the nannys for special occasions, like traffic lights and wet slip road corners

That, and they're handy for emergency stuff, which as I'm getting used to the car is far more relevant as I'm more likely to do something stoopid by accident

Airfield day seems like it might be a good idea, there's also Driverskills at Elvington, although they do less of the public days unless you do a group buy, and are more concerned with car control rather than having a giggle.

I think I might want to bang a set of winter tyres on later in the year (I live a steep hill away from work - last year I walked to work on a few occasions) so I'll see if I fancy burning off the tail end of these ones on a day like that
