If the outer edge of the door were pushed out, it would make the car materially less easy to get out of in a confined space such as a car park without any benefit. They look fine in the real world, as the M3 demonstrates.
I don't think it would - the limit on width of door opening will be at the top of the panel where it meets the window line, or possibly just a touch lower in line with the door handle and that whole area sits flush with the rear 1/4 as it is so is fine. Hence a flare on the lower section wouldn't create an issue, but would 100% look less like they've cheaped out.
That. And we’re talking about a rolled lip of a few mm just to change the pattern of the light to make reflections less harsh.
Also the doors on the M3 didn’t get criticised because people were too shocked at the face of it.

Edit: also the arches on the M3 don’t stick out nearly as much

Oh ffs, shouldn’t have read the comments, now the arse is ruined for me too
Looks like a glitch in the over-processed images. Doesn't actually look like that at all.
Looks pretty nice in that pic to my eyes.

The touring rear end definitely helps hide some of the sheer bulk of the thing a lot better than the four door.

I've always liked that M5's have been fairly Q-Car. Pretty easily spotted when you are in the know, but not overtly obvious to John & Janet Q Citizenperson. Current RS6 is way too "Look At Me!" for example (for me).

I'm not a fan of the rear 1/4. But I should hope it does look good to some people given the asking price for what is a cooking version of a family estate car!

It's not a cooking version - that would be a 520i.

Only .2s faster to 60 than a new E53 AMG. Talk about bloat.

It will be interesting to see how much it weighs in real life with a tank of fuel.
Will it be yet another car with 5 passengers and over its max load limit.
Dave!

Some of those colours, the green in particular, look wildly different according to lighting and definitely draw attention to or away from some of the panels. The more I see them, I think that green colour with the brown leather is the way to go.
Having been up here for a couple of months, I think even the M3 Touring would be hard work on these roads due to its size, I can't imagine what the m5 would be like.
I think we did all criticise the doors and the flanks of the M3 touring when it came out as it looked like they could have gone further but not sure why they didn't - was it to keep cost down with shared components or was something else dictating the dimensions.

I don’t like the new world.
Just seeing that on the road shows it fills the lane up pretty well so I just can’t see you being able to enjoy it in as many places.
A shame, I hope Mercedes can do something with the next E63 as the new RS6 is just too massive aswell.

The 'new' RS6? The current one came out in 2019 and it's no bigger than the 2013 RS6. It's got slightly wider arches than my S6 but it's absolutely not too massive for UK roads.

I watched the Autotrader review where they had a E28 M5 at the beginning. Would much rather have that, looked ace

Every Friday 25th I am allocated as Holley's link bitch. Hence:
Around 10min45 Rory goes on about how - in Sport-Plus gearbox mode, the whole car shakes on every upshift. Is this something positive/desired?

Exactly, it’s too bloody big
The local one is also too low as it struggles over speed bumps.
The older I get, the more I miss more usable cars on fun fen roads.
It doesn’t help that there is a lovely champagne coloured E39 M5 in town which to me was the absolute best super saloon.
Zero appeal anymore and previously I really liked the C7 RS6 but a short passenger ride just put me off.
