Why are road trips so alluring? They just are.

Looks glorious, what's the route you've taken?

Up to Ullapool, ferry to Stornoway, few days on Lewis and Harris, ferry to Berneray where we spent one night, drove down through North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay, ferry to Barra, stayed two nights on Barra and drove over the causeway to Vatersay (shown in the above photo), now on ferry to Oban. But we’re not finished yet, a day on Mull tomorrow and then a night on Islay before we head home via a night in Inveraray.

Since it’s quite a long crossing from Barra to Oban (5hrs) and Calmac cancelled our ferry to Coll which was going to break that journey, I’d say it’s potentially worth going South Uist (Lochboisdale) to Mallaig or Berneray to Uig (Skye) as the return route to the mainland - though some people we were talking to on the ferry had their Mallaig crossing cancelled. It’s an easy drive from the Eriskay to Bernerary, less than 2 hours; but we’d have had to get the ferry back from Barra to Eriskay to do that hence going for the longer crossing to Oban.

Beautiful. Good time of year to do it too.

Great way to really get to know the new car (assuming MrsJ is happy with you pushing it at times).

Sounds like a fantastic adventure. The way the road snakes off into the distance without another car in sight is the stuff of dreams

How are the roads up there ? I was there a long time ago and the edges just broke away and on some corners they narrowed considerably as they had simply worn out.

They’re better than on the mainland - think I’ve only seen two potholes. Plenty of patch repairs on Lewis but as we headed south they got better and better. Barra’s roads almost look like they’re all brand new.

Definitely a good bonding trip for the new car. Mrs J hasn’t minded my overtakes when required but I’m not exactly caning it around - I was pressing on more in the MX5 round the NC500 last year.

Because of a prior engagement, we're going to take the overnight ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe and then bang out the drive in one hit starting very early Sunday morning when we arrive in France

I'm off to Ireland on Saturday with TIPEC for 6 days. Ferry from Holyhead to Dublin, then across to Galway, Galway to Dingle, Dingle to Kinsale, Kinsale to Leixlip, then back to Dublin.

TIPEC road trips are always awesome. We've done Germany 2023, Germany/Switzerland 2024 and Scottish Highlands last year.

I may be off to Germany in July for a 928 related trip too.

I've been wanting to do a "Best service station in Europe" video, which would be absolutely epic, although would take a good few weeks, and cost far more than I'd ever make from publishing it. However, I would happily do it for the love of the game if I had a few £k to drop on a random adventure right now
