Ah, I didn't know about the cat issue. I wonder if that's what was wrong with the one I saw puffing black smoke like a steam train.

I would go for a manual Audi R8 4.2 over any Gallardo. There's something more pure about them, and they're a fair bit cheaper.

I just think the Gallardo looks better, I've always thought they were the best looking of that period of supercars. Never been that fussed about the looks of the R8, especially the original. It's a bit of a jelly mould.

Gallardo has always been more attractive to me than any of the post-Countach V12 Lambos.

Surprised to see that comment about the noise - not because I have any reason to dispute it, but the 2x manuel V10 R8’s that driving buddies have owned sounded fabulous. Possibly both fitted with versions of Milltek systems when I heard them.

5.0 "pre-LP" has an even firing order versus 5.2 "LP" engine has an odd firing order which makes the difference to the engine note. Later 5.2s clearly have a great sound and more volume but the tone is definitely better on the 5.0. In the order of the difference between v10 and v8 f1 engines IMO - both great but the older car has the edge.



I also never really loved the R8 and seem to be one of the rare bunch of people that prefer the facelift. Again, a V10 plus is within budget now but (ironically given a 911 is still top of the likely options), the image of them being driven by twats (and I'm talking about London / the South with no slurs intended for Mik's mates) puts me off. Plus one car that is a theft magnet is enough - I don't fancy two.

Not sure I get the love for the Gallardo - it never looked particularly exciting, it's basically just an Audi underneath and the Huracan is a vastly better car.

I thought the original Gallardo didn’t look great, the original was very much a narrow body Murcialago style and looked odd. It got better with successive facelifts though. The originals weren’t particular good around the track either were they? Although I guess it wasn’t a Lambo strong point anyway…

Gen 7 Celica in thunder grey! Had one when Emily was wee and they still look sharp. Some colour palates do date them a bit though.

The Tuscan is another car which as soon as you mention the name I can remember how it felt to drive, how it sounded, the smell etc. Same as an S1 Elise. I think that's the same for all TVRs actually.

What was the standard Tuscan when it came out, 40-ish?
