I’d probably agree with that… plus the new one has a black interior and sports seats and looks to be 2WD so altogether a much nicer spec.

Well, that certainly explains why it's less desirable and a lot cheaper
Swapping engines over is not a big deal, a long weekend should cover it if you crack on and have the rights tools - especially in this case because the engine needs to drop *down* from the car, so you need the car quite a long way off the ground. Normal trolley jack & axle stands won't cut it.

Yeah, £100 seems like excellent value - although that's only available on Saturdays, presumably so that it doesn't interfere with their normal working week. So a multi-day job would start to get complicated.

Problem would be that when you remove engine and gearbox then you no longer have a rolling shell- do 911’s still come apart like old ones where the whole lot drops out as one?

Looks like. Can probably do some of the surrounding work at home to make access easier (bodywork etc) and after that it looks like it's not that bad, compared to some cars, etc.

If it was me I'd take the everything out of the old car that you want to keep. Trailer what's left to the lift, drop the subframe and get a scrappy to pick up the rotten shell.
With the engine out, chances are a couple of burly boys could move it around like a wheelbarrow
If you were prepared, you could probably get the good shell rolling in a day.

I don't have a trailer, a lift or a wheel barrow and I'm not particularly burly, so I'd stick to normal jobs I could do on the driveway.

Was just pointing out that if you were well organised it's doable between a driveway and a rented lift.

i do need a wheel barrow, but Rev keeps on buying up all the knackered 996s needed to make one...

Slightly off topic, but I bought a new one last year. A heavy-duty Hamerlin (
this one in fact ) on the recommendation of someone who used them for work. Recommended.

So I'm getting
really rather bored now.
Went after another one a week ago - blue, buckets, manual with Weiss Gold wheels. Very cool spec but I was a day or so late to the party and he had three viewings booked for the weekend and would let me know the following week if it hadn't sold.
Anyway - the bloke called me the next week to say that the 964 he was looking at buying "fell through" and now he wasn't selling the GTS until he found something else he wanted. Apparently the car market is now like the housing market... you can't get a viewing and when you can it falls apart because of a chain...
I'm now considering the below from a dealer... great spec (PDLS plus (fancy adjustable lights), multi way adjustable seats, carbon interior pack with carbon sills, PDCC (dynamic chassis control), pan roof, BOSE, cruise). Utterly terrible pictures by someone who can't judge exposure, which don't really do it justice.
Few downsides/things making me hesitate are:
1) its black - preference was for Agate but to be honest agate isn't my favourite grey anyway so maybe I could go for jet black metallic;
2) it doesn't have the alcantara interior - though it does have extended leather so isn't the poverty spec with rubber dash and no trim on the doors... could make it very hard to re-sell...
3) its 4WD - to be honest maybe a plus in the crap weather we have in the UK and is fully rear wheel drive until needed... I'm also a sucker for the red light bar on the back like the air cooled cars of old.
4) the big one... its done 43,000 miles... I made the mistake of talking to my dad and he is officially allergic to high mileage cars and discounts anything with over 20ish thousand miles on it. I get the point that its value will start dropping more quickly as I use it... but then again Porsche's are more resistant to that than other premium marques (e.g. Ferrari). It is also £10,000 cheaper than an equivalent with 25,000 on the clock...

Jet black metallic is nice in the flesh. It has quite a lot of flake in it so it’s not just black, and that helps it when there’s a bit of dust or dirt on it too. It’s not going to be as immune to dirt as agate but agate seems inordinately popular for not a mid-grey. More a Macan colour, IMO.
Can you ask them to give you the average speed over the life of the car? 43k miles round London is very different to 43k motorway miles.

To be fair a lot of it is worrying about taking a bath on it which is frustrating as really I should ignore the resale aspect. For example, I'm completely fine with the all leather interior (which is more expensive and less boy racer than the alcantara) but I know that buyers looking for a GTS really want it (other than if you're in the US interestingly).
The reg is a "RE" prefix so Reading rather than a London car. On that basis I'm hoping its done most of those miles up and down the M4 but yes the total hours run on the engine would shed some light on that. Equally it is around 12.5% less than one with 10 or 15k less on the clock and has two years Porsche warranty so there is that.
Essentially I can lose the whole summer crossing my fingers that the right car comes up or I can buy this and use it. Carpe diem and all that.

Is this one manual?
I have to say I think I'd probably niggle over it more if I bought it with some reservations. If you're buying from an OPC then surely you can put a deposit down immediately over the phone on anything which comes up and looks OK? If its not up to scratch in the flesh then it should be an easy matter to get it refunded.

Nope this is die doppelkupplungsgetriebe. Again I've made my peace with that as 99% of GTSs are PDK and it would certainly have its advantages for sitting in traffic around london, plus you can't get cruise with a manual I don't think (at least the one I was looking at recently didn't have it).
I think the make or break will be condition to be honest. Even from the crap photos I think there are points which may need to be fixed (e.g. the hubs on the centre lock wheels look to be marked from where the tool has been used to remove them). I know they are £1,000 a set to replace. I'd want them to agree to do stuff like that (or reflect in the price).
Think I'll just pop down tomorrow and take a look at it.

Sounds like you're having a similar problem to me when I was trying to find a decent Boxster. Is that Basalt Black like my 987? Stunning colour, especially in the sunlight but an absolute fucker to keep clean and will show every little imperfection/stone chip.
I'm a bit on the fence regarding 4WD. The extra stability and traction is nice, but bigger tyre bills and potentially maintenance costs. Mileage wouldn't put me off at all, in fact I'd rather have one that's been driven and enjoyed rather than some garage queen that's sat there drying its seals out,

All the blacked out cars in London belong to a certain demographic which I wouldn’t want to associate with!
