It's only to replace another boring car (that I've been fine with running for 3 years, and had boring ones before that too). I'm not really interested in what others may consider 'interesting'. All these sorts of cars are basically white goods for me and much of a muchness, I just want it to be passable and cheap leaving more money for shiny bits for the Lotus.
just go to a car supermarket and let them tell you what to buy then!

Alright Rich, just pooling the collective knowledge for a car that ticks the most of my boxes.
then ignoring it!

Went in my mates 'new' (2017) v60 yesterday. Seemed eminently sensible, comfortable and fast enough. Based on the Mondeo platform. Auto. 2.0 turbot. Leather etc. Seemed a good left field choice and nice way to soak up the miles.

I borrowed my mate’s Duster to pick up some large items; awful car, seat really uncomfortable, wasn’t even that economical (TBF I wasn’t expecting much though obviously, given the price point)

no idea - what car is leading for you at the moment?

Are you funding Duncs’ purchase, Rich? You seem very invested in the decision.

That rules that out then.

I don't know what's leading, but some good feedback on the Mazda 6, Octavia/Superb is a good shout to look into, including diesels, some thumbs up for Volvo. All this is useful stuff to me.

I’d consider the Leon Estate too, but might not be boring enough.

I like our V60, it's nowhere near as well built as my P2 S60, but its comfy, has a decent sized boot, is cheap to insure and fuel, and looks decent enough for a biggest estate car.
Rides worse than my lowered S60 did though, and worse than my XF, but handles pretty well, I suppose because it's a mondeo chassis with volvo settings.
All UK S/V60 got the sport suspension as standard, as they thought that's what our country wanted, I think for the type of car, the comfort settings may have been better.
I Tried a V40 but it was too small in the back and in the boot, it depends what you need spacewise, V40 = Focus, S/V60 = Mondeo.
Leon estate is a interesting one, they're not bad for cabin space and boot space, decent engine selection as well, Octavia probably bigger and more spec for the same money?
Corolla Hybrid Estate would be a nice everyday car but I would imagine they're out of budget, very slow, but great on fuel, lots of space and very relaxing to drive, will pretty much drive itself on the motorway as well if your hands are touching the wheel!

I've driven one of those before, they are quite boring

. Good shout though, I'll add it to the list.

If the Corolla hybrid is anything like the Auris then it comes with a CVT gearbox which is hateful!

It doesn't seem that bad on the new ones, I've driven one quite a bit now, and the electric motor seems to do quite a bit of the work.
You can learn how make decent progress without making it rev its cock off after a little while of experimenting!

I just have an admittedly irrational hatred for these requests - if you want an intentionally boring car, just buy one - we can't help!

As prevous, many did help and still are!
Some people in here actually know about these cars, so if someone can help me avoid having to trawl the internet and read a few year old autocar reviews on every potential option then that's a good thing, and some even seem quite happy to do this.

Talking about cars? on a forum for car nerds? you should've known better Duncs.

Also, if you can suggest a car that is not boring but fits the criteria then I'd be delighted!
Most cars that are actually fun are either in budget but not practical for a family or out of budget based on either purchase price, age, or economy/running costs. The boring bit is being realistic and also not a big problem because I have another car that fulfils my driving fun needs.

These threads do seem to upset some people. I would probably never need to do one about fun cars because I always know what I want in that area. Just seems like the margins and variety in this segment is a lot closer and less interesting.
If my budget was a bit bigger I probably would've just got a C-class and not done a thread (just because I fancy one).
