It really is a solution (a, as in singular, not the only solution, but absolutely can be one of many policies that could help people). Given how poor diets, obesity and the consequent health issues/NCDs are one of the biggest health threats and resultant costs to the NHS in this country.

I’d agree that in extreme cases it should be an option but “maybe if we get these fatties off the couch, they’ll get jobs” isn’t an extreme case.

When we were in Edinburgh, my partner got a free gym membership to help their mental health and weight management and it worked amazingly well.

Education and support in the form of what? Cooking from scratch can be done on the cheap and there’s a million recipes on the internet, for free. I get that it’s easier to slide a frozen pizza into the oven, though.

Nobody needs to look perfect but I find it mind-boggling how people need education and support to not be overweight. There’s arguably more ‘education and support’ right now than there ever has been yet obesity levels are getting higher.

You need to make long term changes to people’s behaviour to get results here.

All this will do is funnel a lot of money from government into the private sector, which is what they really want.
