To be fair to the van driver, if I saw Vine disappear into my blind spot I'd reverse on the off-chance too.

Its what he does though... The other thing that he does frequently when he sees a driver doing something the he disagrees with, or he can tell when a drive is about to do something which could put him at risk.. is speed up so he's inevitably caught up in the chaos and causes an incident. Part of any use of a road is reading situations ahead and acting defensively. He just can't help himself.

usually it's because it's not their video and it's copyrighted.

Without any other context than the video it looks like the cyclist made a mistake by going for a gap that wasn't there. Their fault. Potentially with serious repercussions for the cyclist.

But if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you're no longer a cyclist.

Saw that vid over the weekend of th ex-police chief in the USA being knocked off his bike (and killed) “for a laugh”. Thankfully the prick driver is being charged with murder.

It was some advice from Runcorn Fire Services (I think) reminding cyclists about the risk of being hit by a car and recommending some "stay safe" tips (just from memory):

1. Wear a helmet
2. Don't wear headphones or listen to music whilst cycling
3. Wear bright clothes so you can be seen from further away
4. Follow the rules of the road and traffic lights.
5. Make sure you have your lights on when it gets dim
6. Can't remember

All of the points were (imho) pretty reasonable self-preservation tips but have been interpreted as victim blaming and/or absolving all responsibility from vehicle drivers.

I like how they say that having lights on - making yourself more visible - is good advice - but wearing brights clothes - making yourself more visible - is bad advice. I think 6 was similar insomuch as it was visibility related, but I also can't remember what it was.

The guy doesn't seem to be the smartest.

I know some cyclists who refuse to wear anything hi-viz because its their right not to and they won't make any concessions for car drivers who should be able to see them in any weather, any time of day etc. Recently, I have to wonder if this is expanding into cyclists who refuse to have a rear flashing light.

Headphones are a funny one because I frequently see cyclists in town who have headphones in and who also are displaying really bad cycling... also often carrying out moves which make me think they don't care if they get hit. Pulling out in to the path of cars without checking over their shoulder or indicating is a common one. Are the two things linked? Probably not.

It can be really disconcerting though if you have headphones in and are overtaken close and/or at speed by something you didn't hear coming, but that's more of a problem on fast roads in the country.

I've said it for many years, but it's hard to defend bad cycling, because every single time I go into Edinburgh, I'll see many examples of it. Hardly any of it will ever put other road users or pedestrians at risk, but it does little to improve the relationship with car drivers.
