I am not sure if the explanation is correct, or whether Vauxhall were trying to provide an answer for Britain’s love of saloons at the time, but aI had completely forgotten (or may not even have been aware of) the Mk1 Astra solution….,

I didn’t think it was to do with making a cheaper car, but more to do with offering an alternative for people who preferred saloons.

I think it was offered before the hatchback - certainly they dropped the booted version pretty early. I remember seeing one parked near a mk3 Escort RS1600i on my way to school back in the early 80s.
