On the upside, it sounds pretty damn epic. Popping in to Porsche to hand over £56 for a new sticker on the way home seemed like the bargain of the week.

£3195 including VAT. Of course he gave me the total without VAT first!

They did a bang-up job - the car is running great, the exhaust sounds great and he can't find anything else needing done to the car. Great service from David Phillips Autos.

Of course I didn't tell Mrs Mike as she doesn't need to concern herself with such man business. "Was it over a £1000?" she asked with a horrified look. "Yes, afraid it was". So that sets the cost at about £1001 in my book.

Anyway, I can get on with driving the car now.

My wife knows that the 928 is expensive to run but I tend to give her optimistic ball park figures and all the bills are kept in a folder that she never sees anyway.

Tempering my £400 bill for paint with the 'look at the retail cost of it!' line went someway to softening the bill for the paint on the TVR, The cost without my neighbours trade discount would have doubled what I paid.

How much was the exhaust? OEM GT3 ones inc cats are almost £9k plus fitting Mine is still original so no doubt will need to be replaced at some point.

A few years ago I was considering buying a car near Edinburgh and David Phillips Autos was recommended to me for PPI.

I bought a Design911/DesignTek one - it was about £950 with a discount code they were doing at the time. The garage seemed impressed with it, I don't think they'd fitted one before. I'd really wanted to go with Gert from Carnewal in Belgium but he didn't have any to sell and my exhaust was too damaged to send him for modifying it.

Yip, but was about the same for a switchable valved exhaust regardless of where you got it from and thanks to Brexit/COVID stock wasn't great anywhere. I didn't really have the luxury of waiting either as the timing belt needed done which is an engine out job so wanted to get it done at the same time. Plus there was a whopping big hole in one of the back boxes.

What's this timing belt thing? Next service on mine is a major and I have to get a specialist stamp only because of resale. It's a massive fuckin con if you look at parts that come to less than a ton. 350 quids for labour I wish I could be bothered to run a garage.

They don't having a timing belt. It's a poly belt for aircon, water pump and alternator.

It's at the front of the engine facing the back of seats so a little fiddly.

Engine out and you didn't do the RMS or IMS ?

I'm waiting for the parts list - both garages referred to it as a "timing belt", in fact OPC did too. It needed tensioned (or replaced) and some guides replaced, but as @Carlos says, its at the front of the engine. It was just picked-up on when they were preparing the oil leak which was at the base of it which is very common.

They'd been done previously and the car was bore scoped before I bought it.

Here's the list of work done....

Both cam chain tensioner pads worn and timing chain tensioners weak.
Stripped and removed both cam tensioner pads then fitted new can tensioner pads and also renewed all 3 timing tensioners. Carried out valve timing adjustment and rebuilt.
Carried out major service. Renewed engine oil and filter. Renewed pollen filter. Renewed air filter.
Renewed spark plugs.
Renewed aux belt.
Renewed brake fluid.
Removed and fitted stainless steel switchable exhaust silencer (supplied by customer) then wired up and fitted vacuum hoses to rectify.
Oxygen sensor on ban 2 after cat damaged so removed and fitted new sensor to rectify.
Cam chain tensioner
Cam chain tensioner
Top timing chain tensioner
Side timing chain tensioner
Lower timing chain tensioner
Gaskets
Major service
Oxygen sensor
22 hours labour
