Re: Coronavirus
I avoided visiting some older relatives at the weekend. I've got a bit of a tight chest* but no temperature, no continuous cough, but am WFH just in case it does get worse.
*brother in law who's a paramedic wondered if it was a residual ache from the harnesses last weekend but I don't think we crashed that quickly!

Re: Coronavirus
I used to think that too. Selling at a loss and using the money to buy at a lower level is far wiser.NotoriousREV wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 10:08 amYep. This is a good article from the Washington Post. Watch the simulations.

The question is like answered most is why is our government doing something very different from pretty much every other country. They keep telling us the experts are being listened to, so why can’t they share what the strategy is and why?

Because that’s what the simulation said. As for how accurate the simulation is...
How about not having a sig at all?

The answer is ban short selling.
Watch the usa market get suspended today.

They have circuit breakers at 7% (20 minute suspension for everyone to calm the fuck down), 13% (Another 20 minute break, we warned you!) and 20% (no more trading for the day, go home and think about your life choices).Broccers wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 1:23 pm The answer is ban short selling.

They’ve already suspended once today and they’ve only been trading an hour.

This is probably just my own bias showing but a lot of the response to this that we've seen from the UK and US seems to be more focused on stopping our unsustainable economic system from collapsing rather than actually helping people.

Re: Coronavirus
The impact of the economy coming crashing down will probably result in much more suffering than this corona could cause.

Yes, because stopping economic collapse does nothing to help people...ZedLeg wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2020 2:33 pm This is probably just my own bias showing but a lot of the response to this that we've seen from the UK and US seems to be more focused on stopping our unsustainable economic system from collapsing rather than actually helping people.

I watched The Big Short yesterday. They quoted the stat that every additional 1% unemployment leads to 40,000 deaths in the US.

Re: Coronavirus
I'm not saying they should just let it collapse but the balance between protecting the markets and protecting the population seems off to me.
Boris's mad herd immunity idea (I swear someone in his office has misunderstood how it works) looks to me like they're trying to push through the epidemic as quickly as possible with a high human cost being acceptable.
The US managed to find like $1.5 trillion to prop up the markets for what, half an hour? But they can't pay people sick pay or guarantee that any vaccine that comes will be affordable to people without insurance.
Again this is almost certainly my bias but it looks like they're protecting the money at the cost of people.
